2 years ago I had to replace my Shurflo water pump. It had lasted 20 years, a pretty good run. I opened it up and found that water had leaked past the seals into the motor and it was badly rusted. So I replaced it with another Shurflo, hoping to get another 20 years out of it. Instead, it's gone bad and has the same problem. The motor is all rusted up inside. I was out river camping last weekend and so spent about an hour tearing it down and at least getting it to function for a few days. But I'm wondering if I just had bad luck, or if "they don't make em like they used to" or if there's some backpressure problem I experience when using the city system at the dock. Any thoughts?

are you doing anything different?? Is there a way to bypass the pump when on city water??

Either a manually-operated positive shutoff valve or an inline check valve should be installed close to the output from the pump, so that the pressure shore water can't force its way into the pump.

my experience with the newer shurflos is that they don't have a weep hole between the pump and the motor so when the diaphragm fails, water is forced past the seal into the motor. At least on some of them like the Shurflo Blaster extreme and the like

but pressure from dock water can't do that unless the diaphragm is worn and has a crack. happened to me after 2 years of liveaboard year round use.
