Thanks for the "wiser" compliment Vic. Be it known that I have questioned my wisdom and even my sanity at times for restoring and running an old wooden boat.
Operating the PST 12-02 and its disinfectant dispenser with a manual hand pumped head required a tweak.
The little Wilcox Crittenden Headmate head on the boat is a compact water conserving head. The head works fine and flushes the entire bowl nicely, but even when operating at maximum efficiency (right after a rebuild) it doesn't crank out a heck of a lot of water.
The complication I ran into while running the WC Headmate with the Purasan 12-02 happened when filling the disinfectant dispenser to the fill line with each flush. As I pumped the head, the disinfectant would run out of the dispenser and into the Purasan treatment tank so fast that water could not reach the dispenser fill level.
The "tweak" was to use two flow metering clamps (Raritan part no. 31-304C) instead of the one clamp that came with the Purasan unit. The original clamp is used as intended on the dispenser intake tube to facilitate disinfectant shut off during clear water rinses.
I put a second (identical) flow metering clamp on the output tube that leads from the disinfectant dispenser to the treatment unit. This clamp is tightened slightly to restrict flow. As a result, I can fill the disinfectant dispenser to the fill line and flush the head after 10-12 strokes of the head pump. I wait fifteen seconds or so for the disinfectant to drain completely into the treatment unit and then push the treatment button.
I noticed that the amount of time required to fill and drain the dispenser on this 26' boat will vary a little depending on a slight list of the boat from one side to the other (the Purasan is mounted over the keel) or if I'm rockin' and rollin' during a day on the chop.
Interestingly, this complication did not happen with a newly rebuilt head. The freshly built head pumped more than enough water to reach the fill mark without flow restriction on the Purasan dispenser outlet tube. The problem arose after the head had been used for a couple of months. After head "break-in" the water output falls off a bit, but maintains a usable level for most of its operating life.
Using a pressurized water feed for the disinfectant dispenser (PST 12-03) would eliminate the need for this tweak and provide a more "turnkey" mode of operation.
