We had a Purasan system installed this year and are very happy with it. No more pumpouts! It is plumbed so the output from the vacuflush toilet goes into the old holding tank and from there to the Purasan system where it is treated and discharged. The question is can we still use a holding tank treatment chemical? We've had different answers. Some say the chemicals interfere with the Purasan chemicals.

Read the owners manual. Answer is hothing other than CP or cleaning concentrate may be used.

"Use ONLY Purasan Tablets.
2. DO NOT add any other chemicals or cleaning products to the toilet or the treatment system. Raritan C.P. - Cleans
Potties and R.C. Raritan Concentrate are the only factory-recognized cleaning product that may be used in the
toilet."

Sounds like you have the Hold 'N Treat system, with a Purasan connected to it. If so, you can use KO or Odorlos in the holding tank without causing any problem.

Who installed your Purasan system? I'm thinking of having one installed in our boat.

A boat mechanic friend of ours did the installation. We were his guinea pigs since he had never done one before. He is going to do two on his boat and a couple for yacht club friends but he really doesn't want to do any more than that. If you contact Raritan I think they can give you some names in the area. We've been very happy with the system. No more pumpouts. The hold and treat works great if you're in a raftup or in a marina since you can wait to discharge. The Purasan used a lot less power than the Electrosan system

I sent an email to Raritan - just waiting to hear back.

I'd love to take you up on that yzer, thanks for the offer. My desire is to just use the y-valve i already have to switch between the holding tank and overboard discharge. I'll use the marina pump-out when necessary - no need for a hold n'treat. I don't have a lot of room in the mid-ship bilge area, which is where I think this thing needs to go, so that's why I was looking for someone with expertise that could tell me if it was even do-able.

I can't remember - where are you berthed?

Purasan is a good system. I'm going on the fourth year with one onboard. No holding tank on the boat.

I did the install and will be happy to show you the system some weekend. Mine is placed between the head and the thru-hull. You can use a Y-valve to run from a head to either a Purasan and overboard or to a holding tank. If you want to run your head to a holding tank and then through a Purasan, you need the Purasan plus the Hold N' Treat system.

Manticore, send me a PM and I'll reply. I'll be at the marina this weekend (not far from Rio Vista and Isleton).

Tumbling Dice, do your waters allow overboard discharging while using the Purasan system? If so, I guess you're not in a NDZ. For CA that's had to believe if that's the case.

It's not that hard to believe. The history of water pollution on the West Coast isn't nearly as long or as serious as that of the East Coast.

Manticore999, Tumbling Dice and myself all boat on San Francisco Bay, the California Delta (the SF Bay estuary) or offshore. The only NDZ in this region is Richardson Bay located in SF Bay near Sausalito. Richardson Bay is a NDZ because of a long history of substandard municipal sewage treament in Marin County, reduced fresh water flow owing to water exports from the Delta and some fragile native benthic species.

The rest of our region is not a NDZ. Ecological and water quality concerns in the remainder of our region are caused primarily by fresh water exports, invasive species, substandard municipal or residential/commercial treatment systems and agricultural run-off. The non-NDZ water quality is not adversely affected by treated Type 1 boat discharges: which exceed sanitation specs for Federal and State EPA municipal water treatment.

A good installer and service guy for Raritan products in the Sacramento/Delta area is Tim Wiest Yacht Service (pronounced "Weest") - home base is Vacaville (510) 414-7084. I've heard nothing but excellent feedback about him, his honesty and the quality of his work.
