Put-In-Bay, Lake Erie

Thanks SLW. I'll firm up some reservation dates when I can get them accepted.

Our boating vacation is still 8 months away and our winter has not started yet, but, if you're around next July while we are at Cedar Point, feel free to drop by.

Mike, we will be that way in the same time frame. Let’s get a thread going next June.

I was just looking at the calendar this morning and I think we will leave on 6/28 and return 7/13-14. This is really subject to change but right now I am thinking of crossing to Stanley for a couple days, head west to Rondeau which I have never been to for 1 night then onto Leamington for a couple days. After Leamington we will probably head over to the Ford Yacht Club for 2 or 3 days then will probably go to Port Clinton YC before heading over to PIB, Kelleys and then home. I think a 7/8 or 7/9 arrival to PIB would be a good plan for us.

SLW…when leaving Leamington to go to the FYC where would I go for customs. We have to do it the old fashion way with the video phones. If we have to cross over Cedar Point first then I’ll probably rethink all this.

Get a I-68. This eliminates all check in problems. US & Canadian check ins will be a phone call from your cell. Also, if you are going by FYC, check out BobLo Island, their ferry will take you to Amherstberg. Great town to visit. Crystal Bay great dingy area. We will also be in Leamington on July 1 & 2, then heading west to BobLo.

We will also likely start our boating holiday with leaving on June 28th. We would be coming from Lake St.Clair and heading down the Detroit River into Lake Erie. I agree with Dustcutter that a stay at Boblo and taking the short ferry ride over to Amherstberg would be enjoyable. We did that the last time we headed into Lake Erie.

I have never been to FYC, but could easily make that a stay before I head into Lake Erie. Is obtaining a transient well there for a night or two difficult without being a guest of a member?

Niles, another option to a I-68 would be to consider getting your Nexus. My wife, son and I have used our Nexus cards (along with getting a BR #) to report (via phone call) into the US and back into Canada for about the last seven years now with no issues.

If we wanted to see if some of us could meet up somewhere we should try and work out tentative itineraries before April so when Miller's Marina is back open for reservations (April as I understand from their voice mail) we would be ready to at least nail down this popular marina in PIB. Those first two weeks in July can get busy depending on the marina.

P.S. When you're in Port Stanley your only about a 1/2 hour car drive from our house.

Ron, I will have to check out the Boblo ferry, sounds like fun. We love to dingy all around the FYC area. I know…I should bite the bullet and get either an I68 or a Nexus. We do have the Small Vessel Report System #’s but the idea of keeping them updated with your float plan sucks.

Mike, are you a ILYA member? I don’t think getting a slip at FYC would be a problem but check out their website. We have actually never paid there so I don’t know what their rates are. I’d bet they are just like our club, if no receproical agreement then regular transient rates apply.

At some point we will hookup with our friends that we normally travel with and I know they will want to go to the Crews Nest but if we are in PIB at the same time as you Miller’s is right there in the same area. Our other friends are leaving the week before us because the one guy is in charge of the Greater Cleveland Boating Association rendezvous at the Huron boat basin that weekend. I don’t know how it will all work out by hey it’s only December. We never make reservations (except maybe the Crew’s Nest) so our plans are always changing. We joke about starting with plan A and wondering what letter we end up with. My wife and I really love going to Cedar Point to people watch so I’ll be scheming on how to get a night there.

Also keep in mind that holiday weekends at Put n Bay, many of the marinas require a 3 or 4 day minimum. When staying at Millers we cruise to other areas, school house bay for swiming. Day trip to Scudders on Peele. swiming on the south end of North Bass. Do not feel that you would loose your dock. Docks are held for you during your stay. Just notify dock master before departure. If you time your cruise correctly. You could catch the Canada Day fireworks at Leamington. Put N Bay fireworks on July 4, or Cedar Pt fireworks.

Will do. In fact, I could even see you on the island. I spend a lot of time there.

We are not ILYA members, but I don't mind paying reasonable transient rates. We like trying new marinas that look interesting and also enjoy exploring via inflatable. Our inflatable gets lots of use during boating holidays.

I'll post our tentative itinerary as we get closer to spring time. Do you still winter your SeaRay in water at MacRays? I remember a thread about that a number of years ago.

Yep - she's in there now. It looks kind of strange with these low water levels: the top of the arch is about even with the dock. It's a LONG way down the laddder to get to the boat.
 
I think a lot of Lake St.Clair boaters are quite concerned with the current water levels. A week after the Canadian Thanksgiving long weekend in October we had 2' 9" of water in our boat well. The US Army Corps of Engineers are forecasting May 2013 to be 10" lower than May 2012 at this point.

I imagine a number of Lake Erie and Lake Huron boaters would also be in a position of concern with their marina water depths.

I am very concerned. As fleet captain of our club I had to move some sailboats around this year because of water levels and that was in August which is way too early. We have had minor issues in the past but not until the October time frame. I was down to our river Saturday and I think my boat would be on the bottom if it was in now. As I think about travels for next year I'm concerned about entering Ports or marinasclubs that I'm not totally familiar with. I hate winter but I'm hoping for a really bad one :)

Hope you guys had a good winter and your boats are now back in the water and running well?

As discussed earlier in this thread we agreed to follow up with our plans on visiting Lake Erie during the first two weeks of July 2013.

Here are the reservations we have confirmed so far. We have reservations at Miller's Marina in Put-In-Bay for Tuesday July 2 and Wednesday July 3rd. Weather permitting we plan to be moored at a Put-In-Bay mooring buoy for Monday July 1st.

We have reservations at Cedar Point Marina for Thursday July 4th and Friday July 5th. Took SLW's advise for Pier 11 and will look forward to viewing the fireworks.

If anyone else is planning to be in this area around this time and cares to add to this thread, please feel free to do so.
