Question ??

ANOTHER QUESTION............

I need to replace all 4 of my 12v batteries this season.......I have PowerMasters 27 series ( dual purpose ) in there now and they only lasted 3 seasons....

Any recomondations ???

Im surprised u didnt see my truck on the side of Tonys shop. Thats where we brought bryans boat....

Anyway.... Id get a agm battery as a replacement. ull never have to service them again.....

I didn't notice it when I was there at about 3pm ish......What time where you there ?? .

AMG ?? gel ?? Can they handle being on charge constantly ??

I needed batteries last year and like you, I considered AGM, but decided against it. I do have AGM though (2) of them for my stern and bow thruster.

Reason I decided against AGM was:
1. The weight and size.
2. The Cost, they just did not seem worth it for me. The warranty was like 1 year complete the 4 year pro rated, which means year 5 you’re on your own. The batteries I got with the boat (Interstate) lasted 4 years and are half the cost of the AGM replacement. So for the same money as the AGM I can get 8 years of Interstate Batteries.

Also, in the 4 years I had the Interstate batteries, I never once checked them for water, when the one battery started to fail, I popped the cover and two of the cells were really low on water.

What I like about AGM, is they are sealed units.

Also.........I hear the gel batteries are VERY sensative to constant charging ???.....
 
AGM's can be abused..... They dont mind constant charge ... READ about them

For those that use there boats ..adding water to the batteries is atleast 3 x a year deal.....

I cant reach my batteries so it would pay for me ... don u dont use ur boat so.......

and I picked up my car at 3 pm saturday.... so close..

Rob....... What I read is they are sensative to over charging....and require special gel ( low amp input ) battery chargers. I have the original 4 bank charger....and wonder if it will cook gels ?
I think I should stick to the original wet batteries.

JUST missed you at AMC.............................
 
The charger in my boat can be switched to charge agm im told.... Just a thought ...

My batteries are in a crappy spot...

My charger is old and puts out amperage for wet batteries..........gunna go with 4 new wet 27 series..........call it done.

I have alot of other things I need to do too.
 
Add me to the battery list... I was pulling my impellors yesterday and I was having trouble getting the starboard one out even with the puller tool. I decided to give the starter a shot thinking maybe turning it would help free it. I knew that battery was weak but I thought I could at least wait until launch. Well, even with the battery charger on it wouldn't turn over the engine. Just a click from the starter. If I shut off the charger it shows 10 volts. I'll probably pick up a new 8D tomorrow and install it next weekend.

I only check my battery water once a year and don't normally need to add much and I use my boat. I don't normally leave the charger on at the dock, wonder if that affects it.
 
WOW... by july I have to add water to all the batteries. then again in the fall....

Only battery that doesnt take water is the bow thruster.

I ASSUMED it was from the constant discharge of the fridge's etc.....

My fridge and freezer are 110 so I don't have that draw on the batteries. Maybe different usage patterns affects it.

Don, I go to that guy Public Generator on Merrick Rd for batteries, he usually has decent prices and has my 8Ds either in stock or can get them right away.
 
Thanks John......Didn't think of Public Battery/Generator....I went to Marine Mate to check them out.....I'll check Public today.......

My problem was 1 of my 4 batterys always needed water...so that cell was bad..... the charger always try to bring it up to 12V and couldn't.....and cooked the others. I knew I'd need to change them all this season and left it on all winter incase of a leak.

Rob.........Your right....31 series will fit in my trays. More cca/storage...better battery
 
Hey Don....when you brought in your "eyebrows" to be used as a pattern to be duplicated, did you notice a "set" or "cup" in the area where it bends around the frame? The reason I ask, is because I asked a local canvas guy if he could use my existing canvas as a template and said that he couldn't guarantee that it would zip up correctly to the existing glass because of that "set/cup". I'm curious how yours turns out...
 
Dom........ They did have a cup/bend on both eyebrows.....but my canvas guy said it didn't matter.....he will make adjustments.
They will be done by the end of the week.....after he installs them ....then he'll cut the drop back on the boat for a good fit.

I'll let you know how they turn out.
 
Montrose the alternator starter shop on Montauk Hgy. in Babylon Village has a good supply of batteries on hand. He usually has all sizes from group 24, 27, 31, 4D and 8D in stock. I got a good deal on 3 group 27 deep cycle, 2 group 27 dual purpose and 1 group 24 starting batteries from Boaters World in Massapequa last year. Also here's something to consider. 3 group 27's paralleled together take up the exact same space as an 8D, are cheaper and have more CCA's. Plus if 1 goes bad you can just replace the bad one.
