Anyone have Direct TV at home ?

How is the service during " weather "

Had words with Cablevision......and tossed them.

Going with D/T.......and was wondering if they suck too.
 
DT can be effected by tree's, heavy rain storms and even snow lying in the dish. As long as you have clear line of sight to the DT satellites you should be happy with the service overall.

We have had DirecTV for 5+ years
Started it for the boat(s) and then started using it throughout the house and replaced Cable-
We lose the signal during very bad ‘weather’ mostly heavy rain or snow – I still have basic cable for about $15 a month as backup if/when the signal craps out
Their customer service is as good or bad as Cablevision
I need to upgrade to a HD dish and new HD boxes/DVR’s and Direct wants me to pay for them
Since we have Fios internet -I am thinking of getting of getting fios TV and only using the Sat of the boat
Verizon is no winner in Customer service either
 
Verizon FIOS is what I originally wanted....but its not avaiable in my area yet ( political BS ) so they offered me Direct TV...along with their phone & internet package.

Are there 2 kinds of dishes/ boxes ?? reg & HD ? They didn't mention HD.....maybe I should check before they come to install.
 
I've had the dish, cable and Directv twice. I've been pissed at them all but I'm less pissed at Directv. I also have it on the boat (one bill). You will lose the signal during heavy rain or snow. Usually it only lasts a few minutes but there have been times up to an hour. This occurs three or four times a year.If you like sports there is no where else to go. The sport packages are second to none. There are also lots of movie channels. Make sure you are there for the installation because the strength of signal while they are pointing the dish to the satellite is very important. Happy surfing. Billy K.

I would think that any new install would be with a dish that is HD, but you never know so confirm with them

When I had my dish install(on a pole on the ground)i did not need HD so non HD is was what they gave me

I have been thinking about switching myself for a long time, but for me, my issue is I have 7 TV's plust the boat, which makes it 8. Every TV had to have a receiver. I can consider sharing 1 receiver with 2 TV's but that is a hassle if I have all the kids here and guests, etc. With cable, I have basic cable to every TV at no extra charge, with the DT, I need to rent a box for every TV, so that can be a extra $40/month right there! I do have a discount through my work, I will send you the link, check it out and see if it saves you anything. Also keep in mind each receiver needs its own cable wire, so if you have the house wired in a series, you will need to be re-wired. Good luck!
 
Yeah........The way I have it wired now is ....every ( I only have 4 ) TV has its own cable to a main 1-4 splitter..... If I need to re-wire it.... shouldn't be a problem.

I got your link.....actually Verizon offers D/T at a cheaper rate for the same channels. I'll believe it when I see it.

At this point ....anything to loose Cablevision.......................they SUCK !!!
 
I had directTV for seven years in the old house. We lost a signal ONCE when snow collected on the arm. We also had cable and that was out much more often. When we lost power for a few days, I fired up the Honda 2000, ran the fridge and a TV with DirectTV...cable was still out.

I recently switched to Dish not realizing they don't carry MSG and YES, big mistake! FIOS is supposed to be here soon...any day now, any day!
 
Once Fios gets to you.....you will really like it. It took me a long time to decided what to switch to from cable. Had Dish before and was very satisfied. When it came to decision time i am afraid the cost comparison is what sold me on Fios. They had given me a price freeze for two years, not just one. I have really fast internet,phone,tv from them in a bundle. I get alot more for the same money i used to spend and wont get an increase for those two years. Free 19 " HD tv when they had that offer too. Picture is great, dvr, guide all that stuff. You just cant take it with you on the boat. If the online checker says not available yet, call them instead. Mine said it was not available until i called and told them the people across the street have it, what gives. I had it installed later that week.
all in all, very satisfied with their service.
 
Can't bring FIOS to the boat. If I am going to switch it will be something that works on boat as well.
 
FWIW, on the boat we have two tube TVs. I picked up a digital to analog converter and can see about 10 channels now using the previously installed glomex antenna on the radar arch. I was very very pleased. Next step is to get an HDTV LCD for the boat and dump the 20" tube in favor of galley storage space.
 
I just ordered my 2 free boxes courtesy of our US govt. I really only need one for the boat. I am going to try it.
If it gets more than the 2 spanish stations I get now, I will be happy.
We watch DVD's on the boat.
 
Another vote for FIOS.
I would get it as soon as it gets to your area if you can.
The quality of their product is outstanding and they don't use third party sub-contracters to do their installation or service calls.
I called them because my HD DVR box started acting up after they went 100% digital back in April and they were here to swap the box out the very next day.
I switched form Cablevision and my neighbor switched from one of the satellite companies and we are both very happy.
 
I have had DirecTV for 6 years. 2 years now with their HD service. They upgraded the dish and box at no charge for me. You just need to negotiate. I couldn't be happier with the picture quality and their customer service has been more than adequate. During a recent wind storm my dish/bracket bent and I lost signal. They fixed at no charge, after a negotiation. I lose signal only during a real heavy storm, and the outage usually doesn't last long.
 
I've got Dish-Network and it SUCKS.
I'm looking for another service provider but my choices here are limited. I thought about Verizon FIOS but I called them and it's not available in my area. I've had Cable with Time Warner and I'm sick of their seemingly yearly price increases with no notice. They just send you a bill for more than it has been in the past and when you call they just say they had an increase. No options....just pay it or have it turned off.
Dish Network goes off-line 3 times a day with a screen that comes up on your TV that says the system is powering down to make upgrades to your system and if you're recording a movie....??...oh well...ya just lose that part of the movie...
My Internet is with Clearwire Wireless and THAT SUCKS too....Have to unplug and plug back in the Modem every day around 6-7 PM because even though all the lights for signal strength are lit there really is NO signal plus it doesn't fully support an IP Phone even though according to THEIR specs it does.
I just wanna ri[ down the Dish.....pack up all the TV crap....unhook the Computer...and throw it all through somebody's window sometimes.
Why can't ANYBODY (seemingly) come up with something that works here without having to have three different providers with three seperate bills without paying $50.00 more a month for the convenience?
 
Andy......Thanks for the heads up......... just re-contacted D/T and checked..... I had to change my order to HD boxes....they had me down for regular boxes.

So far...............so good

Now with the portable Sat antenna I have......I should be able to bring one box on the boat ?? I hope !
 
Hi Don,
I have had direct TV for over 15 years .
In Babylon I got the HD dish it hasn't lost a signal yet.
Best part I take it with me in the RV when we I go Drag racing and on the boat.
I also just did the three play with Verizon because the don't offer VIOS in this town yet.
I save about $45 a month.
They said when VIOS arrives ,I could switch with no penalty.

I used to do that all the time- no problem

I have one for the boat full time now

I dont have a self locking dish on the boat so I have to find the signal myself- very easy
