We're about to have our house powerwashed, cedar shakes, and are trying to decide between sealing or staining afterward. Anyone have any experience with this? Also, some are recommending "translucent" sealers, others heavier products. I'm concerned about loosing the natural look of the shakes and peeling in the long term.

I think you are spending to much money on the house (ps. should it be to or too) better have some money for fuel for the boat. :)

Walter - agreed, but I really need to do this stuff before the boat goes in. I'm doomed after that until October. We're talking desperate here. Don't worry, the fuel money is in place. The rule in this house is money for the dog, then the boat, then.... whatever. So what's the stain vs. sealer answer? I'm counting on you South Shore guys.

BTW, it's "too."

Just spray some diesel fuel on the shakes, if any remains after a fill up. Even comes in two color choices.

I hate English, makes no sense, why do we have so many words that sound the same but are spelled differently, job security? I think the people who invented this language were lawyers at heart.:)

PS. I have a power washer if Andy wants to use it. If I had cedar shake, I would remove it and use vinyl siding that looks like cedar shake. I am into the do it once mode and be done.

I agree............maintainance free is for me !!

Walter,

There really are too many words with two different meanings to make any sense.

Thanks for the offer, but Andy said to tell you that he already has one and his is bigger. He tried to powerwash a little last year and wound up etching the cedar and some pavers as well. What a man! A few houses on our block went the vinyl siding route. I know it's maintenence free, but I love the look of the cedar. Think decks. Any wood will do. Seal or stain?
