So what can I look out for on a 25 y.o 20' Formula in a 1 hour lookover tomorrow? I know to hull tap, basic outdrive eyeballing. Can I tap stringers? I will run through whatever systems there are, tabs, trim eyeball wiring/harnesses, look or interior stains. Any hull joint advice? This one was interluxed with no wax paint. I'll challenge the boweye, do pushups on the teak platform.

And a 2 axle trailer with brakes? Lines, hubs? I guess a road test for the brakes is the only way to check them. Thanks for any other tips.

Keep in mind that items that will cost less than $10 and/or 15 min can be effectively ignored. What you are looking for are items that will cause the boat to burn or sink... ie: it must be structurally sound, and all major systems should be in working ( or better ) condition.

Light bulbs burned out are actually a non-issue. Irritating, yes, but they do not come close to being a deal breaker. ( Note: burned-out bulb is one thing; bad wiring is a whole 'nother ball-o-wax. Take care in your diagnosis. )

You can safely ignore items that you know you will Rip/Replace. ( Though make note of them so that you can get a $$$$$ reduction! ).

Remember: They are selling the boat. Current maintenance has very likely taken a back seat. Necessary repairs that occurred after the decision to sell were likely done w/ duct tape/silicone sealant/a dab of paint. Assume that you will need to do a few things before you start the lump and take off.

Mostly look at the boat in a manner similar to, "Ok, what needs to be repaired before I go on vacation". That should cover most of it.
 
Good philosophy Bill, thanks. Unfortunately, this will be a 1 hour or so lookover so will hit the big spots 1st, hull driveline and apparent maintenance prudence, past tlc.
 
The biggest questions would be the hull and engine/outdrive. Major problems with either on a 25 year old 20' and its basically junk. If after looking at and there are concerns, I would pass on it. If rock solid and the price is right, spend a few more hours going over it or better yet, have a surveyor check it out.
