Quick tipping question

Haven't been to Fire Island in a few years, heading to Sailors Haven next Friday. Last few times the dockmasters didn't come over until I was tied up, etc, and only collected the money...still threw them a $20. Is that too much?
 
I think so. I usually throw $5 if they do nothing, $10 if they help with lines. If I am in a fancy marina (not Sailors Haven), I will throw $20. When we used to go to TJ's, I gave the kids $10 to help me dock and do lines, and $10 when I left.
 
Thanks, I have horrible tip guilt, and end up throwing people too much money for fear of looking cheap! We don't do overnights often, but the few times we went they came down a good hour later to collect. I know a good tip usually means that they will keep an eye on the boat and lines, but they weren't too visible when the marina filled up.
 
I would say tipping at Watch Hill and Sailors Haven is probably optional, it's pretty much a, "your on your own marina", as opposed to a real marina where you have a dockmaster and dockhands, who come out and help you. I tip the kids at watch hill when they help me with a reservation, getting the slip I want, etc. Usually the person who collects is not the person who I made my reservation thru. I like to take care of him for that one time when all the reservations are gone and there are slips left....if u know what I mean!
 
A lot has to do with the Marina. IIRC, Kingsmill does not allow the employees to take tips. Kinda nice actually. The person with the 80 footer is treated the same as the person with the 25 footer. You pay dearly for it, but is is a refreshing vacation from the palms up for no service we have come to know and loathe in this country.
 
The days of Ira......at Westhampton Beach Marina.....a $50.00 tip would get you a news paper every morning along with a 1/2 dozen bagels.........a beach pass.... the keys to the rest rooms/showers ( that got locked at night ).....some of his wifes home made deserts.......and Ira's happy face !!!!

Well worth every cent !!!!
 
Regarding WHB: I tip the dock kid $10-$20 depending on what he's helped with, not Frank as he's wealthy enough. I can get my own paper and breakfast. As far as the restrooms, they don't lock them at night anymore. Now a homemade dessert might be worth something......
 
Yeah.......Once we even got an invite over to Ira's house for some drinks.......and dip in the pool...............we miss him !!!
 
I alway's tip Don's Wife when she helps me dock when he is out on the little boat.....oops, thats not a real marina! Sorry, my bad!

That's quite a list of amenities all for a 50.00 We are actually heading over there for an extended stay over July 4 th week and could use some of those freebies. What;s the deal with beach passes, and where is the closest beach. Is Frank willing to go that extra distance??

The beach is over the bridge and if you ask Frank he will give you passes.
 
Allie....Like Dave said....Frank will probable give you beach passes if you ask him...............but I'm not sure about much else....We haven't been there since Frank took over.
 
I never new Ira, sounds like a great guy. Frank is a really nice guy.

The new guy Frank is a great guy and I knew him before he was in charge of the docks. He does not want to take a tip since, well let’s say he does not need it and doing the job almost as a hobby, I will hand him a $20 and say put it into his dock assistant bucket.

For Watch Hill, Sailors and Atlantique, they do nothing but collect my money; I usually give a token $10 just for safe keeping so to speak. At other places that the dock masters tie up my boat, I give a least $20-40. At WHB, I same as Don used to tip Ira $40-60 bucks for the stay, which would only be one or two nights and got the same amenities.
