I have twin 454 mercruisers it has mufflers on it but it is still very loud , too the point you have to talk very loud if at the helm. The mufflers are 12in dia. and 30 in long but nothing inside. Has anyone found a muffler that wont kill performance but makes the exhaust quite? Thanks

Jamie, what does your water flow look like? The reason I ask is when marine engines water flow is reduced the end result is a loud engine or engines. I use water lift mufflers by Vetus on my 8.1L HO's and they are fairly quiet. I had a pump starting to go bad and one side was considerably louder.

WOW! 12" dia by 30" long gives you plenty of room to put in baffles and not cause any (or very little) back pressure. Either that or install a water lift system like Bill said.

Water lift mufflers would likely be by far the quietest , but Vernatone MKII (2-stage) mufflers by Centek should help a lot too. http://www.centekindustries.com/

But adding even very good mufflers can be somewhat hit or miss for particular installation due to the resonance harmonics and wavelengths involved that can sometimes create unintended unbearable results. I believe even just changing the distance the of the muffler from the riser/elbow can probably help or hinder passenger hearing comfort considerably due to change in resonance of synched engines' exhaust.

Sandy would you move the muffler closer to the riser or away from it? Bill the water flow is good rebuilt pumps all new hoses etc. It was cool when I was young but I got a little older and it is a PITA now. It has a 5 Inch exhaust on it even with the good flow of water it is Loud. I will check out the different styles of mufflers and see what is out there. Thanks for the ideas. Jamie

My guess is you have what I have in Saint Max. They are not mufflers per se. They are tubes to get the cooling water out of the boat. Vernalift is the way to go for less noise or, depending how your exhaust is configured, elbows to direct it into the water.

Jamie - The benefit of moving the muffler one way or another is pure speculation on my part but I do believe placement can make a very noticeable difference in resonance. No way for me to guess whether a yet-to-be-installed baffled muffler would sound better in one spot vs another on your boat, and there may not be a lot of choice due to space and access considerations.

I will mention when I upgraded my engines to MPI's from carbed, the higher HP and WOT RPMs required an increase in exhaust size from 3 1/2" to 4" so along with all the other parts I needed appropriately sized new mufflers too. The yard installed a standard Centek Vernatone Round and Y-pipe for each engine which commonly works well but the resonance distortion was unbelievably intolerable in this installation. I brought the boat back to the installation yard and, after talking to Centek, had them swap out for the Vernatone MKII 2-stage Round, which resulted in about a 80-90% improvement over the regular Vernatone and made the boat usable once again . I never experimented with adjusting distances since access is difficult, but always suspected I could further minimize resonance and exhaust vibration. Perhaps the right person at Centek or other muffler mfgr may have some advice to offer about distances and wavelength-resonance for single or twin engine installations?

One other quick point. If you don't yet have external exhaust flappers, as a good start just adding those ( Sierra # 18-4458 for 5-6" ?) can make an appreciable difference in exhaust noise heard by others over always-open outlets. As a side benefit they could help protect against water reversion due to following wake if for some unlikely reason engines cut out at cruise.

call Centex customer service with the specifics of your application. you'll need to know the height above the waterline of the discharge from the engines and the outlet on the side/transom. you will also need the allowable back pressure spec from the engine mfg. we had a similar issue with a pair of 454's, centex helped specify a model # in their line and the difference in noise was night and day.
