Less messy than the garbage can, Vaseline, bacon grease...put out a saucer of ammonia, next morning the coon had vacated.

I think they have to release them. I had a squirrel problem too (another exterminator bill) and those guys they kill after they trap them.
But I remember when we had the raccoon problem the exterminator telling us that he wasn't allowed to kill them.
You can buy the traps and trap them yourself for a lot less than the exterminator charges, but you get a fine if they catch you releasing them. The exterminators supposedly know the legal place to do it.
