My yard is in the process of ordering the electronics for my new boat - Raymarine E series. Originally, they had said I could get the 48 inch open array radar antenna (4KW), but it turns out that it won't quite fit on the radar mast. So, I'm now getting the 24 inch radome antenna (also 4KW).
I've never had an open array antenna, and am wondering what I'm missing. How much of a difference would the open array be over the radome? My understanding is that the radome would see everything that the open array sees, but would sometimes merge two hits into one. Is that about right? If so, I think I could live with getting the radome. But if the open array is vastly superior, I'm wondering if I should try to get some kind of special mount for it and get it on there somehow, which I didn't pursue.
