Hi Guys
I'm hoping for a little guidance from the marine electrical experts around here. I've removed my 5 gal hot water heater (AC & engine heat). What I've found is that the PO had wired it up using standard house wire. First thing I did was rip that out.
There was no ground to the h/w heater. Pos & Neg only. Following the wire back to the panel the Pos & Neg and ground were run to a junction box and the ground terminated there. Oh yeah, household box w/plugs and marettes. Nice job eh?
My question is do I run the ground to the h/w heater and ground it on the casing of the heater? The total wire run from panel to h/w heater is about 16 feet. Would 12/3 triplex marine wire handle the load? I can't find an amperage rating on the h/w heater but it's on a 20 amp breaker and has never popped.
Thanks in advance. I want to do this correctly and safely.

PS. Just checked all the A/C wiring. It's all household stuff right from the shorepower inlet to the panel and back to the battery charger. Looks like I've got a chore on my hands. It's all comin' out!
