Only if you boat or live in Suffolk County (can't remember which). The lawmakers want to make sure that if you own a 30' Silverton you won't put 27 people on it to view a fireworks display. While that incident was unbelievably tragic (I can't imagine the pain of loosing a child), I personally don't believe that legislation, no matter how well intentioned, can prevent stupidity.

On May 1, 2014 the New York State Law takes effect and will supersede the Suffolk County law. The New York State Law will require that all persons born on or after 5/1/96 successfully complete an approved course in boater safety in order to operate a motorboat.
Again, you must carry the certificate on board.
 
So, until May 1st, any Suffolk Co. Resident needs a certificate to operate a boat, but after the 1st, only if you were born after 1996?
 
For the NYS license you may get it endorsed only if you took a NYS Boaters course as you need the number on the certificate. As of now there is no NYS database for US Power Squadron or USCG Aux. courses. That is being worked on.
 
I have my original certificate.
It's looking a looking tattered as I carry it on boat folded up and when I had a jetski I always carried it there too.
Figured would be easier to endorse it on license if I can.

FYI , an amendment to the new law is working its way through the legislature, Assembly Bill A.8280. It provides that all boaters in New York State's tidewaters obtain a boating certification issued by either the commissioner, the United States Power Squadrons, or the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. The proposed new requirement will be phased in by age as follows:

2015: 14 to 22 years old

2016: 14 to 28 years old

2017: 14 to 34 years old

2018: 14 to 40 years old

2019: 14 to 45 years old

2020: All

Additionally, no persons under the age of 14 will be permitted to operate a boating vessel.

This bill also eliminates the use of online classes for boating certification.

I suggest you contact your local state legislator and state senator and let them know if you are in favor of this change.
 
And if caught without a license? How is it enforced? Registration? What about out of state boaters? Everyone wants to force through feel good legislation yet no one seems to really want to work out all the details beforehand rather implementing it as they go. Of course one only need look at Oweblamercare to see how that works out.

I feel sorry for you folks in NY. No wonder people are flocking out of there.

Good reason to not have your certificate listed on your driver's license.

I don't know about other states but in NY if you are given a ticket for exceeding 5mph in a no wake zone and the Bay Constable asks for your driver's license and you supply it, your boating ticket gets amended to your driver record of convictions.
 
Well at least it will make it easy to get slips for a few years. Until the marinas start closing from lack of business.

This sounds as good as ObamaCare, I am sure the results will be equally as successful :)
 
I rarely have my wallet or any ID while on my boat in home waters. Could not show my NY drivers license or ID if I wanted to.
