I've got a small oil leak from my oil pan and am having to suck oil out of my bilge. Right now, it isn't that big of a leak, but I know it will grow quickly. I'm planning on having it repaired at the end of the summer, which I think would require me to pull the engine to replace the pan. The engine has about 1500 hours on it, and I doubt that it has ever been rebuilt, so I was thinking that I would do that while I have it out of the boat.
I've got a friend that has a marine service shop, and he has all the tools and expertise to pull the drive and engine. I thought I would have him do the heavy lifting to get it disassembled and then bring the engine home to do a full rebuild. I rebuilt a truck engine several years ago, and I have a nice big shop in which to do the work, so I'm not worried (much) about that.
My question is do you all think it would be worth the effort to do all that? I've got to pull the engine anyway to replace the pan, so it makes sense to me to do the rebuild. What kind of expenses (generally) would I be looking at (I haven't done any pricing on rebuild kits) for a new cam, machining, cleaning, etc. And also, except for the parts, would my experience with rebuilding the truck engine some years ago apply also to this?
