Refrig warm / Freezer awesome

There is no steam. Once you take the teakettle off the stove it stops steaming. When you put it in the freezer it just sits there and radiates heat into the ICE (which is the whole object of the exercise). My freezer has a metal bottom (part of the coils) so setting the teakettle there is not an issue, it just helps conduct the heat. I guess in a freezer with a plastic bottom you might want to use some "protection".

Anyway, it works for me. It's fast, easy, and I can do something else at the same time.

Bill,
Ive seen people do the dumbest things. Was just trying to point out the pit falls to everyone that reads this stuff. Ive seen people use screw drivers and hammers to chip the ice, torches , curling irons ..... The list goes on.

One guy cleaned his refrigerator with a hose. He removed it from the vessel and washed it down. Inside, outside , everywhere.

Several good defrost ideas here. Several times this summer I didn't turn the 12 V switch on when were on the water (genset not running). Temp dropped enough to make some of the ice drip into the pan, rest was slushy enough to remove by hand. Spoilage has never been an issue doing this, and I never have much ice build up.
I never leave the 12V on when we leave the boat. Figure if for some reason the power goes off, as happened last week when the cord came partially out of the socket, the fridge will run for a day or two, run the battery down 100 % cause permanent harm, then spoil everything that was refrigerated.
Either way food is spoiled. At least the battery is not compromised. JS

Walshie- Did it help get your fridge cold again?

My smaller Norcold has a removeable plug in the plastic pan. I remove that, take all the food out and place it in a quality cooler under ice. Then I place the largest container I could fit under the hole. A large pot does well for me. I shut off the power, leave the door open and in 24 hours, the thing is completely defrosted. Wipe down the inside and restock. The water goes over the side.

So...I drill/punch a small hole and cover it with tape/soft putty and remove the filler at defrost time? I like it.

I leave my NorCold on from the start of the season until the end. I usually start it on AC once it's cold it runs off my house battery bank. When we leave the boat it continues to run on 12VDC in case we lose power. If someone were to disconnect my shore side cords the solar panels and charge controller can keep up and surpass the amp hours needed to run the frig.

So did defrosting the freezer work?

The hole is roughly 3/8 to 1/2 inch.
