I have read a few posts on various boards. (posted on this as well) in regards to Ipad's/tablets. Lots of great information and feedback. Being somewhat attached to the smartphone and Tablets I have come to see the great potential they have in boating/yachting. A wealth ofinformation but with your Smartphone and/or Tablet there is some serious issues with dependability and readability.
What I have noticed with the Ipad is the lack of readabilityin direct sunlight. This seems like a deal breaker out on the water. Given a hi-nit 1000nit display or so just isn't available in a tablet now or seeming in the future. I thought there had to be another way. About a year ago I came across a website for a board that sends your touch signals from a capacitive touch screen via Bluetooth to your smartphone. (Android & IPhone) This is manly used in your car to display your phone over your LCD touch screen display. I contacted the Owner – Dave atCustomgadz.com and we have spent the last year discussing its uses and difficulties in the marine environment. Dave has been looking into a hi-nit display in10" that when used with your smartphone you have a sunlight fully functional remote display.
Also give that the LCD driver has inputs for other accessories(Dave programed his Mimicsx2 to trigger other displays). I.e., a remote closed circuit camera which could be used to monitor areas of your vessel or a backup cam.
To give you a short discretion of the prototype put together it is a 10.1 LCD display in a housing I put together that also houses the Mimicsx2 mirroring board. The capacitive touchscreen interface and LCD driverboard with (2) AV inputs, (1) Hdmi input. I have a close circuit camera down below it check on the kido's when I am up on the bridge. Not show in the video but I have the Go pro app that connects to the camera mounted up on the hardware tree on the arch. I would like to try and mounting a IR camera up there and wire it into one of the inputs to have a night vision capability.
I am writing this post in order to open a discussion on Pro'sand con's to having a hard mounted LCD screen that you simply pug your phone into a docking station and is sunlight readable. Dave is still working on the perfecting a screen that is weather resistant and will not over heat.
Some pros of just this setup (lots to discuss on the pro's& cons of tablets on board)
•Phone dock's in the side so you can use the camera function.Smart chart has released a app the gives you augmented reality and this isprojected over your camera view.
•You already have a data plan with your phone and do not needa second one just for the tablet
•Every cell phone has GPS appose to the I pad in which youhave to have the Cell version
•Can connect to multiple camera's for situation awareness
•10.1" 1920X1200 display – 1080 high resolution screen (7"USB is available now)
•All the goodies that comes with tablets & smartphone. Weatherapps, weather radar, web browsing, watching tv programs and sporting events,Online music. Everything on your phone.
Anyways the apps just keep coming and the uses are ever increasing but if you can't see it then it's all for not. I can update this post if people like with some other items of intrest but am looking forward to some feedback and ideas on its uses, Pro's& Con's or anything new out there that is released.
