What's the best solvent to use to remove a painted on name from the transom? Something that'll take the paint off without damaging the gel coat?

Thanks!

Easy Off oven cleaner was recommended to me and it worked fine when I took the painted name off of my boat. Cheap too.

Nope. Go to most any auto shop and buy a rubber wheel that you chuck in a cordless drill. It's like a bit 4" round eraser. Took the name off my boat in 15 minutes, adhesive and all. No other methods even comes close to this - I was truly amazed.

This works great for vinyl boat lettering. In fact it was the advice I was going to give as well. But the poster is asking about a painted on name. I doubt the eraser wheel would work for that.

Nope,It won't , but I use them all the time for vinyl graphics, not painted names.

I've used Easy off oven cleaner very successfully as well on painted name. Suggest folling the claner with some vinegar on a rag, then lots of clean water to remove any residual caustic solution on the 'glass and prevent possible yellowing.
