Removing Name Decals

Looking for suggestions on best method to remove the name and home port lettering on my boats Fiberglass Transom. I am renaming the boat (bought used last fall). I have heard of using a heat gun or using some kind of eraser. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I can't find any reference to 3M Graphic eraser anywhere on the 3M website including there product cataglog. Can you give me a link or some idea where I can buy it?

Use a heat gun/hair blower (carefully) heat the decal & lift edge with a putty knife to lift & peel the decal off.
You can follow up with 3M adhesive remover to get all the glue off.
 
Just purchased the eraser wheel and holder from Boatfix. My first boatfix order. A proud moment. Thanks for the help.

Great, once you use it, you'll wonder why anyone would do it any other way.
 
Just ordered one myself. Can't wait to try it this weekend (if it comes in time).
 
Now when you remove the old lettering, you will have a ghost. Best thing to do is give it time in the sun and eventually, it will slowly disappear.

I got my pad from Boatfix (thanks for the quick delivery). After some experimenting, it worked as advertised. Took the letters off and left a covering of little bits of lettering all over me and boat. Easy to sweep up. I found I did need my corded hand drill turning at 2100rpm. I have a Porter Cable 19v but it did not seem to spin fast enough even on high to get the job done. There was a significant amount of glue residue left behind. I sprayed it with WD-40 and then gently scraped it off with razor blade. Came off very easily. There is some ghosting. I am going to hit it with some polish and then let the sun do it's thing.

I've just tried (my wife's idea)these Mr. Clean Eraser pads. These things are GREAT at removing marks that otherwise you can't remove. In a wood table top (high shine) I had an ink or tar type mark it removed it. On my gelcoat had various little marks tried all type of removers nothing worked - this eraser did it. It's kinda like the sofest sanding pad I ever saw. No scratching. I'd try it even on these shadow name marks. You won't hurt the boat. Amazing.
 
Tried the pads. They just made little black smears on the surrounding gelcoat without removing the black vinyl. I think my drill rpm is just too slow. Got out the hair dryer and peeled the name off in short order. Next weekend the new name goes on!
