removing paint

I have a 12" stripe that that was painted over. I believe the original gelcoat stripe is in good condition. What grit sandpaper should I use so I won't damage the gelcoat.

If you are trying to remove paint over fiberglass stripe; why not use paint remover that is safe for fiberglass ? There is such a thing.
