repair estimate question

Hi, I have a 1987 Four Winns Santara 235. I got a labor estimate of 8 hours to: replace control cable and replace seals and bellows. Does this sound like ballpark for the hours? Current cable is rusted in, apparently. Thanks, Larry
 
Depending on the corrosion factor that we cant see, yes."seals" , that means what seals ,where? complete drive reseal?
 
This is way too vague. Find out what the guy plans to do.

What cables? Steering and upper and lower cables?

Is the 'replace seals' mean complete drive reseal...which requires virtually a complete tear down of the drive.

Sounds like this boat has been neglected and water contamination of the drive is a possibility. If there was water in the drive, chances are some of the bearings and races are shot as well a question of the gears.

I would have competent mechanic do an evaluation before doing such an indepth amount of work. If his opinion is internal damage from water contamination by draining some drive oil, your best bet would be to buy one of the aftermarket drives. Replacing gears and bearing and shafts will easily cost more than a new Merc drive.
