The pick up coil in the distributor of my stbd 454 Crusader XL failed last summer. It caused that engine to shut off while running, like the key was turned. That part was replaced. Would any of you replace the one in the port engine before same thing happens there?

Yes indeed...or at least carry a spare.
I replaced the working one with new and kept the old one as a spare.

Was there any apparent cause of failure? Corrosion, water dripping, loose connections?

I usually replaced things and kept the old working part as the spare. that way I knew that the new part fit and that I had the tools to replace it.

I think I would just`keep a new spare onboard with proper tools just in case it ever goes bad. Unless you've had a number of them go bad , it doesn't sound like there is a need to replace now unless it makes you feel better about it, which is always a valid reason.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll get a spare and then will likely not need it. I didn't do this repair myself. The mechanic took the distributor out to replace the pick up coil.--beyond my pay grade. Bruce, no readily apparent cause for the failure.

Greg, I experienced the same issue last fall with my starboard 502XLi. Mechanic replaced the same parts as you've had replaced, and the problem reoccurred 2 weeks later. After considerable diagnostic time, it turned out to be a connector between engine and wiring harness. Mechanic eliminated the connector by hardwiring the connection.

Sorry, I can't identify the specific connector. I received the diagnosis verbally from the mechanic.

Thanks Gary, I've been good since the replacement. Over 1 year and more than 50 hrs run time.
