replacing anchor rode?

I have 100ft of 1/2line with 20ft of 1/4inch chain. The windlass is a Lofran's so the question is, can I just buy any rode or do I have to buy specifically for that brand windlass?

Rob......... not sure about " Lofran's " windlass............but I know my " Good " will only work with rode purchased from them........any other 1/2 rode doesn't lock into the pulley on the windlass.

I'd try calling Lofrans direct or a local distributor.....and check with them.

Don, I was always under the impression that only Good rode will work on a Good windlass. They obviously recommend their rode which is a hard hand & somewhat more expensive than over the counter anchor line. Several years ago I came across a quantity of double braided line that I bought for a boater friend of mine. He said he was going to use it on his Good windlass. I warned him against it but he used it for several years w/o incident until he sold the boat!

Rob, check classified; I have 200' of 5/8" line on site. Don't know if 5/8" will work on your windlass.
 
Bob......Do you remember the manufacturer of that line........thats good to know. I replaced mine a few years ago.... with Good rode.........and it was expen$ive.
 
Only 100 feet of line, are you sure about that?

7:1 scope allows you to anchor in 17.14 feet of water.

You should have 250-300' of line on your boat, plus the chain.
 
100' is way to much.....for the Great South Bay. You only need about 50'
 
Don, sorry I don't. I did a lot of travelling in my sales job years ago & there was an independent marine supply store in Delaware that I passed every month & always stopped in. Saw this spool of on sale double braided line one day; called buddy & he said buy it. The rest is history.
 
Pardon my ignorance, but how shallow is the Great South Bay? Sounds like the bays of the OBX, a lot of water, too bad its spread so thin.

5-10 feet is considered deep water
 
The bay is shallow starting at the west end but does get deeper as you travel east. Don is correct, the average deep is 5-10ft. I always laugh when new boaters ask me if my depth finder woks any better than theirs. I tell them if you boat on the GSB you've run aground. I've boated here all my life and the boats have gotten too big, the bay is the same.
