I am not familiar with the chesapeake my question is ,is there a route from the chesapeake to the delaware bay without going all the way to the atlantic and around??? any input would be appreciated....
 
yes, the Chesapeake-Delaware Canal.
 
Without my chart in front of me, I am guessing that it is about 40 statute miles from Rock Hall to the west end of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal. Then it is about 14 miles through the Canal to the lower Delalware River.

The C&D canal is off the Northeast River, which is off the northeastern corner of the Chesapeake Bay.
 
As others have said, the C&D. That's why they created it.

The C&D Canal is off the Elk River.
 
Well as a resident of Chesapeake City which is at the midpoint of the canal the canal actually starts south of the Sassafras see alk's government link, and ends at the DE River. But where it really starts to get tight and is lined with RipRap is just east of the Elk River. But from a feeling point of view once I pass Turkey Point which is where the Northeast River dumps into you know you are going to the canal. The Elk is skinny stay next to the markers if you go up there. You'd think you would want to stay to the middle which would be very wrong.
 
Thank you for all the input once again this website is a valuable resource..My next question is to all familiar in the area would it be easier going to the atlantic to get to cape may or taking the canal ,taking into consideration time and distance.from Rock Hall MD.
 
Yep, the CM Canal is a short cut, allows you to avoid what can be nasty water where the Bay meets the Atlantic and it also puts you right into several good marinas so you can top off the tanks and RON if necessary. I won't even bring in the need to eat at the Lobster House!!!

Are you saying the Elk River starts north of the C&D Canal? My chart shows the Elk River starting near Turkey Point near Elk Neck State park. Then father up the Elk, the Elk splits left, and the start of the C&D is the right split.

The COE site says the canal is 14 miles long. That would put the west end near that split a few miles west of Chesapeake City. The COE's map of the canal shows a "route" heading down below the Sassafrass, but I don't think they're calling all of that the canal. That woild make the canal closer to 30 miles long, instead of their stated 14 miles.

You got it right. The canal was dug to the Elk River. The Elk River starts/end at Turkey Point.
 
There's a big plaque at the Army Corps of Engineers building in Chesapeake that says it marks the middle of the canal and if you look at it and the dark line at the bottom of the link that alk posted that puts it well south of the Elk, and you can do the finger on the map test.

In any case I'm arguing purely a technicality because as you state the man-made part starts at the Elk, but I think technically the Army Corps of Engineers feel it goes well past the Elk.
 
It might be that the man-made part is 14 miles long, but also the lower Elk and beyond was dredged as far south as the Sassafrass as part of the total COE project, making the total project length longer ??
 
If you ever go up the Elk that would make sense....certainly not 45ft in depth. Any case not worth discussing.....just pointing out in our neck of the woods we think it goes much further in the bay.
