It seems my Rogue has aged out tech support says although it still works it is time to replace it. I can't update the firmware and it is slowing down any network I connect to and for this reason I keep getting dropped. Is this still the device of choice or is there a better cheaper option? I like the ease of use of this unit I believe some of the other option require a lot of programming to use and may not work as well even it they are half the price I don't like wasting time constantly logging into networks every time I move the boat.
Any all thoughts welcome.

I was in you position last year. I tried a similar product from a company Aigean. Had no problems and he worked a good price. I like their software interface. Erred than the rouge too.

David,

My Rogue just took a dump. I called Land and Sea (where I bought it) and was told that Rogue does not just sell the "bullet" I was told Aligean does, and was told by Land and Sea, it is a superior product compared to Rogue. The hardware is the same, it is about the software and firmware. I was told that the guy that developed the software for the Rogue sold out a few years back. Was told he created the brand Aligean because Rogue did not want to make enhancements. This is what I was told, no proof this is true. I will have my new unit Monday, will be happy to report what I find.If you call Land and Sea (in FL) I guess he will explain this better than me. I have been using the Rogue for about 10 years, the one that crapped out is my second unit so this would be my third. My unit is in a protected place on the bridge, so not exposed to the weather. I was actually looking for something better (hardware wise) but could not find anything else.

The hardware works but they won't support or update their software?

A "Rogue Wave" is a re-branded Ubiquity Bullet:

The difference is the software that is loaded on it. Yes, the Rogue software is quite easy to use. But at $80 vs. what Rogue charges (is it $300 now?) I don't get the point. In MD and FL I rarely find a wi-fi network that is worth connecting to. But if you have good networks in NY buy a different amp and enjoy! Check your antenna and wiring first, though, as those can go bad too.

Kurt,
I think we are agreeing, Firmware on hardware and the interface software, makes a huge difference on how the hardware performs. I have seen the Ubiquity Bullet, Zero phone support and IMHO, from what I have read, the firmware is not that great (hence real world performance) and the software is not so great to be kind. That is why it costs 89.00. I still, personally don't like the hardware, longevity stinks. Rogue, when it came out was the best firmware and software, not anymore from what I am told. PS, firmware is what makes the device work well, software makes is easily manageable. Support is key, as well as firmware. Good software just offers other benifits and ease to a non computer geek.

Just my 2C

I found a new but slightly damaged Rogue Pro I cut a deal for $200 I don't think I can do better then this! I'm very computer literate but having to software make a huge difference. I happen to have access to Ubiquity technically I guess I'm a dealer I have only sold a few but never this model I can tell you the support I got as a dealer sucked! I want something easy to deal with I don't want to waste time playing around trying to get it to connect. The deal I got on this unit can't be beat hopefully I won't be a big issue I know what is wrong with it and being in the business I believe I won't have an issue dealing with or fixing it.

if you are in the business, converting the firmware from your older rouge to the Ubiquity should be no big deal - just sayin, not recommending to do something that violate the TOS.

My old one is too old to update! I just updated a friends unit and it made a big difference but mine won't support anything newer the the 7.01 firmware it is running which is very slow! I ordered a Rogue Pro should have it in about a week it was a deal I couldn't say no to $200 is a steal, even if I have to glue a plug into the socket. I suspect it won't be hard to rig up something to secure the plug in I have dealt with plenty of similar issue with good success.

Dave, where are firmware updates located? I know they can be uploaded to units but I can't find them on their website.

We called and they emailed the most current firmware for my friends unit but made it clear mine was to old to be updated my hardware was out of date about five years ago when I got it from Billy but it worked so I didn't care. Now it seems networks are booting me off because I'm slowing them down I don't think my unit can run faster then 10 base t which makes it tough to stream video. There are plenty of Optimum hot spots in my area but I can't stay connected long. It is very odd if I'm on the boat and trying to surf the web it just sucks it keeps dropping me and reconnecting however when I leave and try to log into my camera system it almost always works but it uses very little band width. For $200 I will experiment hopefully it will prove to be worth while if not it was only $200. For the record Rogue tech support was very good and helpful. I also used their on line message support to speak with a tech who confirmed my unit is beyond useful life the online tech support was also very good which is unusual!

Dave-Hurry up and figure all this out so I can take all of your learning's and place an order!

Dave, mine did the same thing last year. I went on my optimum account and added it to the list of my devices and it has worked perfectly ever since.

I would like to make sure my firmware is up to date, how do I find that out?

Hank, why not just hack into his network?

I already did but his network is too slow. It's easy when your password is "password". Oops. Sorry Dave

I'll have to check what firmware I'm running on both boats. I bought the Rouge on my power cat from Bill and then he included 2 more when I bought the trawler from him. If they can't be updated/supported I'll likely go another route.

You're all fortunate to have enough CableWiFi hotspots to connect to. Xfinity/Comcast is part of that group and the in-building hotspots work well. I haven't ever found one outside that had much signal. And most marina wi-fi networks I've experienced are clogged with what I'm guessing is video streaming. A $100/month Xfinity business account only provides 25mbps download so in an ideal Wi-Fi environment the bandwidth is still maxed out after 8 users. This is why I have satellite TV on the boats!

Speaking of satellite TV, my KVH M1 interface box crapped out on me during vacation. At first KVH told me to contact authorized dealers to get it repaired, but none of them actually repair boxes.

Finally, KVH told me that if I send it back to them, they will fix it for a flat $231 fee (plus parts). They have not sold this unit for several years, so I was happy to see that at least they still provide support.

Kurt chances are your will be new enough to be updated mine is running something like V7.01
Hogan I registered my rogue years ago and it does auto login however it drops frequently as well. Very odd that during the week it stays connected without a problem but as soon as people show up for the weekend I get dropped all the time!
Tech support made it clear that I'm slowing down any network I connect to even it I'm not really using any bandwidth the network slows down to the speed of the slowest device connected to it and that would be my unit.

I got my new unit only to find out I did not need it, it was the POE injector that was bad :(

Mike,
I have wireless IP cameras on the boat and Cablevision, boots the connection every 3 days, do you experience that as well?

Walter

Dave - I'm running 7.51 on the one boat. I guess I'll give them a call and see if there's an update.

Mike - Glad to hear KVH is standing behind that unit. I've been happy with my AzTrax on power cat for over a decade as there's no room for a dome anyway. But for the trawler I've been shopping and not liking pricing for domes that will work deep into the Bahamas (that's the plan with Bill's former trawler in the few year). John Meirhofer left me with a pair of SeaTel 1898s when he sold his Trojan (Dish receiver too). One is for parts the other works. I called SeaTel and they still support them and have parts. It is larger and heavier than I wanted but the price is right and it is Dish HD compatible!

I could be wrong but I think you will be OK and able to update. I have the most recent upgrade in an email but I would agree it's better to ask them to be sure you can run the most recent software. If you can I think you will be happy. I ordered a couple of Linksys routers today one for me and one for Anchor Management I'm looking forward to setting up the new equipment!
