The rudder packing on my downeast single-screw boat weeps some water through the packing. The boat is only 5 years old so I am hoping the packing is not gone and just needs adjusting. Is adjusting this packing a DIY job, or does one have the get the yard involved?
Looking at mine, there are three bolts with double nuts holding a flange to the through hull flange separated by a space. Does one just back off the lock nuts, tighten the adjusting nuts and then lock them up? How much would be a reasonable amount to tighten the three adjusting nuts?
Any insight appreciated
