Traffic on Rte 50 and the Bay Bridge SUCKS on a good day! Looks like it's going to be a VERY LONG commute home for some folks!

Officials are unsure how the wayward barge got loose.
(CNN) -- Traffic backed up on the major highway into Annapolis, Maryland, after a wayward barge loaded with rocks temporarily got stuck under a bridge, officials said.

Workers have secured the 100-foot barge to the structure after it broke away from its moorings in Luce Creek on Tuesday morning and lodged against the U.S. Route 50 bridge.

The bridge will remain closed to vehicle traffic until engineers determine the safety of the structure, First Sgt. Russell Newell of the Maryland State Police said.

An initial assessment of the scene didn't show any damage to the bridge, but a marine safety inspector was to make a final evaluation, he said.

The next bridge down river, the State Route 450 bridge, has been reopened, Petty Officer Rich Codney of the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Most of the cars in the huge traffic jam on U.S. Route 50 caused by the temporary closure had been allowed to turn around and have exited the highway, Newell said.

The barge is owned by Langenfelder Marine, which sent tug boats and workers to snare the unmanned craft.
