On what has to be the best day of the year for Boating (light winds, Low humidity, Moderate Temps)... a Friday!

We ran all the way from Mattituck to Sag Harbor and saw No One out. For better or worse....marina gas at $4.99 is certainly having an impact on traffic. Strange, It felt kinda lonely

I live on the main canal in development of ~900 waterfront homes. On early Friday evenings, I usually see 20-30 boats go by my house to start the weekend. Right now the weather is beautiful....low 80's with light wind and sunset in 1/2 hour or so.....I saw ONE boat go by my house tonight......very sad!!!!!
 
Not us. We are all at Watch hill. Real boaters don't car about price of gas. $600 to fill up and still boating.
 
I paid 4.77 at Jackson's 93 octane with Valvtec...I was pleasantly surprised. Not alot of boats out...ocean was fairly flat.
 
We paid $5.09 in Seaford today. Really hurt since I usually fill up my portable tanks and then fill the boat but this was a last minute ride and didn't realize we were low on gas until we left the house. Oh well, at least we got out on the water today!
 
I don't burn much. Took 60 gallons a side. We are are getting rained on now. Coming down pretty good.
 
In my area, Connecticut River, LI sound, boats are out but staying closer to home. Hamburg Cove and Essex were mobbed. Watching incoming from the sound, mostly large boats. The runabouts are out. It is the mid size cruisers that aren't. Lot of people sitting at the dock.
 
4.68 with the 10c discount at the Anchorage. I hear diesel at Surfside is $6.25 a gallon.
 
With prices like this, what is better to get in a boat, gas or diesel?
Seems the benefits of diesel may be offset by the extra cost now.
 
Diesel is still by far better..........even at $6.25 p/g

Depends on the boat Don, don't forget the extra 50k you would spend to upgrade to diesel.
 
Assuming you were buying used and diesel was not more expensive to buy in the used boat than gas, then which is better?
So take the initial purchase cost out of the picture.
 
Walter is on the money. You really have to look at the boat.

When you get in the 35-40' range, diesel may or may not be the the more efficient way to go for some boats and 40'+, the only way. Below 35', it is probably debatable.

Again, there is alot to consider. Age of the motors...454 big blocks are much less fuel efficient than the gassers made today. Same can be said for older diesels vs. modern ones. Displacement and hull play major roles.

Then there is reliability. Some would argue that the older gas and diesel motors have simpler technology and are less prone to failure. Guy in the slip next to me has a 40' Riviera with Volvos. His boat is a little lighter, he cruises a few knots faster and burns about the same as I do per hour. But I have not had the computer issues he has had because my engines are not controlled by computers.
