SAD............

I actually dont have a problem with the law about no life jackets required inside the cabin. I think it would be of a hinderence in an emergency . Problem is how do u find life jacket afterwards....... But thats a thread all of its own. It comes down to pure stupidity and negligence on the operaters part. ( did i just make up word ? Hinderence ? )

No, you didn't, but you used it very well...

I don't know if its worse to have the kids stashed in the cabin, or out on deck with no preservers, I'm sure its the later... Still comes down to 27 bodies on a top heavy boat.
 
In addition to overcrowding and weight distribution etc, taking into consideration the conditions at the time: a thousand boats leaving the area all at once, all going in different directions, at night. Truly an accident waiting to happen.
 
Something that bothers me about this is I read that the owner of the boat was on top of the boat after it flipped.
Which tells me that the boat was floating after it went over and that the glass was not to far below surface.
Looking at the pics, there is alot of glass, both on the sides and front.
Glass big enough to get through.
I can't believe noone went through the glass to save those kids or even tried!
Someone had something to break it nearby.
Grab a anchor and swing it!
 
Fight or flight instinct. unfortunately many people dont know what they are capable of until its too late.
 
I agree, 20/20 hindsite, it seems perplexing that no one though to do something... but you know how kids are, never know where they are under foot. Very sad.
 
One big concern I always have with sliding doors is that when they slam, they often jump the track and jam. We will probably never knowing that was the case, although I hope investigators make a note of the door condition but let this be a warning to any one who owns or runs a boat with a sliding door. Make sure it is secured and cannot slam shut.
 
To avoid exhaust going into cabin you should keep it closed.
I leave mine closed with the key to open it in the door.
Another thing about Silverton's is they do have very low gunnels.
Gunnels on my boat are about twice that of a silverton.
 
Boat upside down and in total darkness. Thats a tough one. Im sure people tried but thats no easy task. There is a video I think on news 12 of the boat belly up with people haning on and alot screaming of names. Brutal !

If it was my kid they would have to pull me out dead before I gave up.
Tie a rope to your leg and dive in.
Pull out my dead body if I don't come up.
Kids actually can go longer without air than adults.
If they found them in 10 min i bet they had a shot at resuscitation

If he had a 15' beam he legally could have carried 32 passengers.

Not that I'm agreeing with it. Just pointing out how crazy the rule is.
 
The problem with any of these numbers is the limited usefulness of them. If I load up an aluminum skiff with 3 bench seats and it's placarded for say 3 or 4 people, that's all well and good but if all of them stand on the transom and there's an OB on there as well, it's going to swamp and sink, even in calm water. The layman wants information that is obvious and foolproof, and there's no such thing here.

If I load my 32 footer with 8 people, they can mostly move around where they want other than the flybridge or the swim platform and nothing is going to break and I'm certainly not going to roll over. Putting 27 people on there would like loading up that skiff - possibly OK, but those people better all know to keep the boat balanced or at least sit where I tell them and not move unless I clear it no matter what happens. Otherwise results are unpredictable.

Would love to see that video from the night if you find it. I just didn't hear of any attempts. Just a lot of yelling and screaming and one report said captain was on top of boat flipped over waving arms. It's all hindsight now. Just can't imagine what those poor kids went thru. Drowning has to be the worst feeling as it. Don't happen quick.
 
With the air pockets and all . I dont even want to think about it .
