Sailers adrift

It never occurred to them that, beyond about 12 miles, you are on your own. Totally. Most lifelong boaters are aware that an EPIRB, a sat phone, and/or HF rig is very nearly as important as having a spare ( manual ) water maker ( oops ).

There is also another viewpoint ( seen in story comments ), that perhaps they had some other motive, such as get headlines and/or write a book. ( Not a view I agree with )

In any event, they are rather lucky.

There are "holes" in the story, possibly due to poor reporting. Difficult to make any actual assessment with the story as provided.
 
Turns out they had the EPIRB, but never turned it on.
 
a years worth of food for a voyage from Hawaii to Tahiti . Granted that is far but who loads a years worth of provisions.... I am happy they are alive but really why not activate EPIRB after day XX? Something smells fishy....

I know this is a controversial subject, but if it can be proven that this was just a stunt to generate a story for a book or movie, then maybe those ladies should be made to pay for their rescue.

I'd bet on it. Almost nothing about their story makes sense.
