Listened to the armada of Salmon fishing boats in Monterey Bay. Not to good of an opener. We actually had better reports up off San Francisco.

Been waiting for a report from a buddy that went down to Monterey. Gettin' kinda late so not promising.

I've been wondering......hope to get some positive reports soon!!!

For what it is worth, we had no customers from that area yesterday or today. That is unusual for a Salmon opener.

Do you think it being Easter weekend had anything to do with it??????

Okay, I guess I get to post the first report.

We fished out of Half Moon Bay both days. It was very slow fishing! We ended the day with five salmon from 4-9lbs on Saturday. We had one shaker and farmed two at the boat. We were surprised to find that we were actually one of the high liners for the day. A single boat limited for eight fish, but most boats ended with a fish or two. Even the party boats had low scores; from 1 fish on two of them to a high of 9 on the New Gravy.

Sunday we headed out and ran further south. I landed one 12 lber. and we had one shaker. It was a nice day for a boat ride, but catching wasn't too good for us. Other boats did a little better on Sunday, but it was still spotty at best.

BTW, Phil I heard of one boat about 6 miles west of Moss Landing with the engine out and they were taking on water. I thought I heard Vessel Assist taking info from them. Is that a dfifferent operation down there?

The crusty old timers at the docks turned their eyes toward the sky. They said the low that came through put down the fish.

What about the report about the 70 Orca in the Bay?

somebody had too much beer on the boat and/or too much wine at Easter dinner!!!

Charlie,

We were north of Monterey Bay, we went down as far as Pescadero, but we never saw a single whale. I heard tell of several spectacular whale shows, though I think they were Humpbacks not Orcas. The killer whales may have an impact, but I think it has more to do with ocean currents and weather. A few weeks ago there was lots of krill, dirty water, birds and all the good signs of fish. Over the weekend, the water was mostly really clear, we found little bait and the birds must have flown south. The only good thing is that the water temps are down to normal for this time of the year.

That's one of the contradictions. We need cold water for Salmon and warm water for Albacore. Too bad we don't have deep water near shore like up north.

Dave,
The Santa Cruz operation is a different company/contractor. We used to work that area, but turned it over when we took over the SF Bay. The remote nature for us is too much loss of control and a liability risk with out just the right captain(s).

My wife has been seeing terrific groups of Dolphins off Santa Cruz's light house point the past two days. I wonder if the bait
is in there.(?)
