Yes- Apparently a boater in his 70's was alone on boat and probably trying to board or clean boat, had a heart attack and slipped into the water at his slip. Family called looking for him as he always reports in when leaving and police found him under boats in vicinity of slip- sad
Yes, this boat is two over from mine at Skipjack Cove. I just got down on Thursday when the police stopped me on my dock. I had my 7-year-old daughter with me and they wanted me to put her on the boat before they pulled this man up out of the water.
I talked to him once this season. He was hardly down on the weekends.
I don't know the name of the sailboat but the slip is C-41. I believe he owns the slip. The boat looked pretty much abandon but I guess he has to keep something in the slip or it gets sold back to Skipjack.
I believe I know the boat but not the owner. The boat has been hauled each fall and launched each spring but I never saw anyone on it. No sails, rigging shot and the fiberglass had more chalk and bird poop then gelcoat. The ducks were always nesting on it! Always wondered why anyone would pay $3K+ every year to keep a wreck in a slip. Too bad about the guy drowning.
After I had dinner at The Granary on Thursday (lobster night), I was cruising around the marinas in my Zodiac and I saw 2 police on C Dock and I assumed a boat was being searched, this was around 6:30. Sad story.
I learned yesterday that he was a co-worker's 2nd cousin. He was 70 years old, had a heart attack, fell and hit his head as he went it. The guy was a healthy 70 YO who still worked and was active. Life changes in an instant.
The gentleman's name was Steve Jablonsky. He was a good guy. Steve was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 4-11, the same flotilla I belong to. He had recently fought and won a battle with cancer; this is quite a blow to all of us.
A couple was returning from the Bay and, after entering the river, the husband turned and realized his wife was no longer aboard. Her body was found a couple days later by Turner's Creek and removed at the Kentmore Park pier.
