I am aware that the market has shifted from inboard CRUISER style boats to smaller outboard DAY BOATS, especially center consoles.

In researching a possible move up to a larger 40' + Cruiser style boat, specifically an EXPRESS that could be single handled with twin inboard diesels, by a quality builder like TIARA or FORMULA looks like one would have to back 15 or more years to avoid the demented POD DRIVE craze.

New = gas outboards and outrageous pricing.

Appears POD drive vessels are being avoided LIKE THE PLAGUE, and are selling for way less, for good reason.

Has any quality builder offered straight drive product over the last 10 years or so, or does one need to go back to pre 2005 for this kind of configuration?

At 64 I'm too old to do another old boat upgrade.

Just sniffing around.....

I find myself in the same position, as low as the market inventory is, IPS/Pods are more available with diesels in that size range
Even thinking of getting a smaller express of around 37' with Gas/shafts- although i never though i'd go back to gas

I am not sure, but I don't think the Tiara open series ever went to PODs. Not as "luxurious" as their flat out crusing boats, but may fit your requirements.

I recently purchased a 2002 Tiara 38 Open (PlanA) with Cummins 450 hp straight drives. The boat had spent most if its life under cover in fresh water and is in great shape. To my thinking I paid way too much but it is a nice boat. There were very few quality boats available under $400,000. The ones I found were sold before I made the call but were still listed on brokerage sites as unsold to solicit calls.

No pods for me either. Many, many folks told me not to be so old fashioned but I knew better. In fact one friend tried to sell me his 2012 40' coupe with pods at a pretty good price. I asked him if he had performed all the Volvo recommend maintenance and he said there was no need to be that prudent with them. Bullet proof he said. Well, when he did get a contract on it the pods were ruined by water intrusion because he had not checked the seals in three years.
