My friend is keenly interested in a 390. He is looking at 1988 and 1989. I will be helping him examine a couple of boats in a week or so. Anything to look out for? Any other advice?

They seem like good boats.

If after you guys examine it....and he decides to purchase.....I suggest a good marine surveyor.

Thanks Don, That is a given, I was wondering if there were common issues that we coudl use to rule out a boat before enagaging in the purchase process.

The first thing to do when you get on a 390 is to look for moisture in the foredeck and stringers. Not just in the ER, but into the salon as well. Window leaks are next on the list, but aside from that, you'll be looking at a well-respected, almost classic boat. There are 5 of them on my dock, and 4 of them are incredible.

IMHO the late 80’s 39’s & 34’s Searay’s were some of the best production boats made, particularly for that time
I never owned one but had many a friend with them and lusted for a diesel powered 39 for years

Gardnersf,

I own a 1992 370 express (new interior and cockpit vinyl) that I am looking to sell. I haven't listed with a broker yet so if it is of interest to look at send a post back and we can get in touch.

The ones we are looking at are Gas.

mcastellitto, I'll ask him if he is interested. Where are you located?

Middle River, MD

1992 370 Sea Ray Express with FWC Twin Bluewater 454 Mercs, FWC (all elbows and manifolds were replaced this past winter for my own piece of mind, i have owned the boat for 3 years and i wasn't sure if they were ever looked at). Highlights: winter 2008 added extended swim platform from swimplatforms .com, replaced all interior carpet and fabrics, all cockpit vinyl was replaced, new Garmin 4208 and second Garmin 498, Lowrance LMF 400, Vacu Flush w/ electro san system, AC, freezer, fridge, Quicksilver genny with +/-450 hrs (these are actually nissan engines).

We are actually on vacation on it now and cruised down to the Rappahannock River, VA, Tangiers and now Cambridge, MD. We cruise at 25 mph with fuel burn of 36/37 Gal/Hr. Boat measure close if not over 40' with a 14'3" beam. These early 90's Sea Ray's were built before Brunswick took over and got into "production" boats. With this beam I would put this ride up against newer Sea Ray's, you have to get close to a 50 footer otherwise the smaller ones beamwise would fit inside this boat.

We are selling because we are looking to move up to a bigger boat.

Mike, my neighbor has a 370EC, and I agree, GREAT BOAT. But it's very much a "Brunswick Production Boat" (that purchase took place in 1986). They have close to 40 LOA, but the beam is about what comparable SR's have today, which is not over 13'.

Mike I checked with him and he is sold on the layout of the 390.

btw the bean is listed as 12'3 on that boat and LOA at 39

I have had a 1989 390 with 3208 cats for 4 years now and its been a great boat. the only problem I had with it is the starboard salon window leak but I was told this is an on going problem with the 390"s but it was a fairly easy fix. I my self was looking for a 390 for a few years prior to buying this one an the one thing I learned that it had to have diesels. I like to travel with the boat an a boat this size traveling at 20 nots turning 2150 RPM sipping 18 gallons a hour works for me. if your friend could find one re-powered with 380 Horizons this would be a good option to diesels. tell him good luck with his search I sure he will love it.
