One of the mechanics at my marina suggested we go to Seaview. Its between Ocean beach and Ocean bay park. Since i tottally screwed up our plans for Liberty landing this weekend we figured we would give it try. Dockmaster told us they have a pool, Tennis courts,Playground etc... OK sit down for this ... 200.00 per nite. Yes not a typo... WE figured what the hell... with the fuel we are saving not going to liberty,... we go... WE get land side slips as opposed to bay side.. we dock.. look for water connection no water ... No water ??? yes no water... ok ... water tanks tanks full no problem. ... Dockmaster comes to collect cash or check... CASH OR CHECK WTF ???????? during our 3 conversations not once did this come up... and no i didnt ask prior . Wife had a check... we shower and go to dinner.. anyone thats been to Ocean beach know its the land of NO..... and its no joke. Saturday we head to play tennis ... we dont even get on the courts before we are turned away... so we head over to the pool... u guessed it ... HOME OWNERS ONLY >... we end up playing some ball on the baseball field ... head back for some cocktails
a homeowner objects to us have chairs on the dock at the marina... U PEOPLE cant do this here ... not like this ... Were looking around wondering wtf this old had is talking about ... We ( us ) cant do what ?/?? sit on a dock in chairs... no music... no noise... just us and drinks... So now were pissed... 200 per nite ... for what... we see the dockmaster sunday morning .. we tell him... he shrugs ... Im new here this is what they tell me u get to do .... Holy crap.... we eat breakfast and sit in our white trash chairs... and continue to emjoy fathers day... Would u believe some other old bitty comes over for more complaints about the kids bouncing a tennis ball to each other... thats it done ..... Spent the rest of day walking around town... watching unleashed dogs crapping in gardens ... people littering ... but thats ok there residents...

Ocean beach great place food and drinks ...

Just dont use the seaview marina

$200.00? That's cheap!!! I tried to get in there 2 years ago when no other slips were to be had and they told me $350.00! No joke. Of course I turned away and never went back. Have heard the stories about the place since. The docking situation on Fire Island is pretty grim, IMO. Not enough nice/great places to go. No more TJ's, seems Sailor's is the best place. Of course if you can get into Atlantique that's OK.

I remember reading a post similar to yours a couple of years ago. I guess things have not changed. I do not think any marina in Ocean Beach is welcoming. Kismet and Sailors Haven seems to have a friendly staff.

Eric,
The marina used to be private and was sold last year. Flat fee of 200 per nite with 2 nite min.

Things have changed! It was always expensive but the owner ran a decent operation. Now thats its sold and the residents own it, it sucks! The people over there are as wacky as they get.

I have been to Seaview a few times in the past, last summer we stayed under the new management which is somehow run by the town. IMO the new management was much better and friendlier than the previous owner - I hope that old attitude has not come back.

The rates have always been expensive, but I just pulled out an old rate and rule sheet from 2005 and with a 2 night minimum on a weekends the cost was $350(under 39') or $400(39'-44') for the 2 nights with a reservation. Walkins were an extra $100. Weekdays were $125 per night for any size. Cash or Checks have always been the policy, except under the old management you had to mail in advance to a Manahattan address.

At $200 for the night for your LOA, it would seem they have relaxed the rate structure a bit or at least not raised them for this year.

Regarding the water, the water lines were is serious disrepair last summer. I remember having to make some repairs when I arrived and still had to share with the boat next to me.

The one positive that I have on Seaview is that my wife really likes the quiet location and proximity to walk into OB. With 2 kids, now 1yr and 3yrs old, it is a big selling point for her. We finally found the pool last year but it was only a kiddie pool non-residents had to pay a fee to use the pool for the kids or swim at the beach - I do not remember how much they were collecting but it was something like 10 or 20 bucks for the day. We also found the beach to be nicer than OB and less crowded.

Just a shame that space is at such a premium on the island, especially for transient boaters. The island is a great destination.

Rob,

Sounds like you got screwed big time. I was there about 3 years ago under the old management. He was a bit of a nut and his rates and rules were out of control. When you signed the application it specifically stated which restaurants you were NOT allowed in, I think it was the mermaid and the albatross. The town had little or no control as it was his private marina so it was his game. But with that said, we had a great time, and was docked on the bay side with a fantastic view, wide dock with water & electric. . Combination gate (but everyone knew the #). Went to town, used the grocery store next door

It was very expensive, but for one visit a year, it was fine by me and our group. Sorry to hear that it may have gone backwards. We were hoping to get in one weekend there this season.

As for the pool, if you stay at Flynn’s you can go to the pool at the nearby hotel by the ocean side. I even think if you could have walked over from Seaview.

Oh yes… you should have gone to Watch Hill, I think Dave and Walter were rubber necking every time a boat looking like yours came in… Ah hell I even walked over to D dock when a 42 DA that I thought was you came in. Same color, but 2 feet smaller.

Danno,
The kids got in trouble for BOUNCING A BALL.... having a catch... WTF.....
The dockmaster was a clueless ladd.... and the kiddy pool at the playground has been abandoned...
But yes Ocean beach was great.... Bars and resturants ... But the stink from the people at seaview kinda hard to get over....

The only way to force improved service is to hit the owners in their wallets. Rates have always been rediculous, they have aways discouraged transients, so why not give them what they want. I can't tell you how many times I have seen an empty Seaview Marina when every other place is buzzing.
Rob I feel for you, with that wide beam, your choices of slips are definately more limited. Thanks for the report, I almost booked Seaview for mid July I think I'll take my party elsewhere.

Here is another thought I must remind myself of when I hear people complaining about this or that......Your weekend may not have turned out the way you planned and you got to leave, those poor souls who were complaining have to live with themselves and can't just leave. I had someone last year complain about using a drop off dock when i was dropping people off. They stood there for a half hour watching us unload until i was done and then anchored. BTW, I had permission to do so by the realtor and people who rented me the house and there were no boats waiting for me to move. You half to just laugh.

Rob that really sucks to hear, that was one of only 2 destinations I never had talk the wife into going.

I wonder if more of the residents are keeping their boats their now that they own it. In the past, I just recall other transients being around the docks at night.

Ocean Beach has transient slips but I thought I read you cannot sleep over night so that will not help me.

It may be time to try Flynns.

Rob,
F- them, put a stop payment on the check ;)

Sad

The Seaview dock was almost empty on Saturday so I doubt many of the residents keep their boats there. What you have is a grade A destination ruined by poor management. They are empty b/c all the people like us avoid this place knowing full well how they treat their transients.
You can stay overnight at the OB Town Dock. Become friendly with the dockmasters (Jeff and Randy) and those two will help you out. Be forewarned that this dock is very active at night. Also if the winds are blowing you are definately going to Rock N Roll even with the sea wall.
Harris

Harris can you stay onboard at OB overnight? last year someone told me they do not allow the boaters to- after all it is the town of 'NO'

Danno, like Harris said, keep it cool with Jeff and Randy the dock masters and you should be ok to stay. Basically if you keep a low profile and no one complains about too much partying action late you will be allowed to stay. When I spoke with the dock master, they did not officially give an answer, but I got the picture. Then looking at the rate sheet they do state groups of hourly rates that seem to extend overnight or close enough. It is very expensive for no power or water. I am happy to have an Atlantique sticker or we stay at Kismet and do the water taxi trek. You can go back and fourth a few times to OB and still come out ahead for the price of a 24 hour stay at OB.

One other point is if you are at OB and you have been out at their restaurants and bars having a few drinks, maybe a bit over the limit, then go back to your boat and just hang out not disturbing anyone, then get forced to leave by the OB police, I think that could be illegal on their part.
