I am an experienced sewer with a great sewing machine. I am planning on making a new bimini for our old Gibson. I have some questions on sewing Sunbrella. Do I need to follow a grain or is there equal give to the fabric in both directions? Also does anyone have favorites for purchasing the fabric and notions? Thanks!

I've never done it but my experience with "professional" work is that the Sunbrella will usually outlast the thread you sew it with. So unless you want to do it "again", choose your thread carefully.

Try Sailrite in Ft Lauderdale, they can hook you up with the right fabric and thread. They are a catalog/ internet provider with an unmatched selection of fabric and equipment for any marine use. Get their advice on the best thread for your machine, as the very best thread is Gore Tenara, but it takes the right technique and machine.

Get the Sunbrella with the vinyl lining for a bimini--won't leak if it rains.

It doesn't leak but it doesn't breathe either which causes some mildew on vinyl side. If it's just a bimini w/o enclosure it should be minimal.

Personnaly I would recomend TriVantage. Thier prices are much better then other places and a good selection. Just google trivantage.
