Where is the best spot to place a shaft zinc? I have seen many on the shaft directly in front of the main support strut which some people do in case the shaft breaks. The idea being that the shaft can,t slide back against the rudder preventing steering. But this restricts the amount of water flowing through the cutlass bearing which is not good. I have also seen them placed midway between the strut and where the shaft comes through the bottom of the boat, but have been told this can lead to balance issues on the shaft. Any ideas as to the best location. Thanks for your help

not too close to the strut or it will block water flow to the bearing

you want then closer to the strut than the log, but like pde said...not too close to hinder water getting to the bearing.

Mine are smack dab in the middle of shaft between 2 cutless bearings. Sounds like I should move them closer to the aft strut to minimize vibration, but not too close. What is "too close"? an inch, 6 inches, a foot, etc... this is one I certainly don't wish to guess wrong on since I've already invested in new cutless bearings.
