I just got through getting new carborated 5.7 crusader engines in my 28' Glasply. Running from Olympia to Edmonds (55 miles) the starboard engine cut out three times. Following the manf. breakin directions, I ran specific times in various RPM ranges. Each time the engine died was similar, while adjusting the throttles to another setting, the engine back-fired (very faint, but audible), then began to diesel, then quit. After running on the port engine for about 10 minutes, the starboard engine fired right up and ran for up to an hour without fault.
I had some old gas left in the tanks but added conditioner and octane boost before filling with fresh. I changed the starboard fuel filter twice and noticed the gas was still somewhat orange. After the first incident I ran both engines on the port tank but the same thing happened.
The port engine never faultered.
My mechanic is saying it sounds like fuel. That seems to be debunked after switching to the port tank for an hour. Any ideas?
