It should be stored between 50 degrees F., and 100 degrees F. Shelf life is generally considered to be 1 year. When the temperature gets hot (120 degrees +), the bacteria get pretty sluggish and don't want to work - kinda like us, when the temperature exceeds 100 degrees [:-sleep][|)]. If it gets below 50, they also slow down and if it freezes, the bacteria die, as has been noted above. However, the enzymes do reactivate when it has thawed, and it can be used for pet "accidents," etc., as Radioactive mentioned.
