1978 mercruiser oldie but goodie 350 260 hp. shifts fine on muffs put it in the water and sticks in reverse have to force it into neutral sometimes goes past neutral into forward what does having it in the water have to do with it is it because of pressure on the prop? kill switch is working fine. any help will be thank you very much

Idle too high?

Something about the position of the kill switch as it moves from reverse?

Yeah, first get the idle around 650/700.

The shift interrupt switch is activated by the cable housing from the drive. Notice it's on a pivoting mount, not a rigid mount. Feedback from the friction of the water on the prop will cause the cable housing to move.

Having the shifter adjusted right also affects interrupt switch timing.

kill switch is working fine.
Does this mean the motor is dying/stumbling when you shift?
If so you need a new lower cable or corrosion in the shift mechanism. When was the drive removed for service?

tell me about the shift mechanism I don't understand what that is when cable is disconnected it moves freely I just put a new water pump in but was having this problem before that motor not dying when shifting when in reverse shifter sticks hard to get in neutral only when in water works fine on the muffs

If the shift interrupter is not working correctly the engine will not stall/stumble/ miss when coming out of gear , in the water
To test, manually operate the switch. it must stall/kill the motor

shift shaft coupler is extremely loose in the housing could this cause the problem

The upper brass shoe is not solidly retained, it will move around when separated from the lower unit
If you are stalling when shifting out of gear in the water you need a new lower cable.if your NOT stalling the switch needs adjusting so it stalls the motor coming out of gear

switch is adjusted cables are adjusted still sticks in reverse when in the lake but not on the muffs

Do you have the drive trimmed differently in water vs out?

the stainless washer that is on top of the shift spline is caved inward would this cause a problem
