I have a 97 355 Aft Cabin that came prepped from Carver for a generator. I have purchased a Kohler 7.3E to install. People are telling me that I need a ship to shore transfer switch so that I don't backfeed the line if I am hooked to shore power. I do not have one of these switches and looking at my Carver manual electrical schematic for a generator hookup does not show one of these switches. I have a friend that has a 01 Carver that came with a generator and he does not have a transfer switch. Is there something internal with the main breakers that will prevent backfeeding the lines? Any help would be appreciated.

The switch you need has two sets of main breakers with a mechanism to insure only one can be on at any one time. Back feeding the line is the least of your problems without a proper switch.
Shouldent be hard to find a small panel for the switches. Check Boat fix

http://www.boatfix.com/catalog/154.pdf 8032 is another. I prefer having meters with the main switches to see the condition of the power but dont see any in the catalog.

My boat came with a generator and I do not have a switch, I fire it up and then unplug from the dock, I never lose power this way. On mine you can hear something click over behind my panel when it turns to gen power.

My 1998 32 Mariner and the 1993 350 Aft Cabin I am purchasing both have an automatic switch that disconnects from shore power when the generator reaches full voltage. I am not sure that Carver would include that switch in a boat that is prewired for a generator. You may want to call the folks in Pulaski, WI and ask them. I am sure that automatic switch is still available.

I do have a automatic transfer switch built into my electrical system. I posted this same question under a different forum thinking maybe there are Carver boat owners that just read this forum. Anyways, the generator is scheduled to be hooked up tomorrow without adding additional disconnects or transfer switches.
