Maybe some of you are dealers. Let me know if this is on me, the dealer or both.
Bought a new boat last year after being out of it for 15 years. Had them install the GPS and VHF. I told them to do everything necessry.
I was told it was all set, and boated all last year, sometimes 15 miles out with my young son and wife. I did immediately get my MMSI # for the VHF distress button.
Messing around in the console the other day I noticed the back of the VHF had an accessories cable hanging out of it, with nothing attached.
I checked the book and this cable in part is to attach the gps to the unit for the MMSI distress
which when initiated will hail the distress and give the CG the boat location.
My assumption was that it was connected fully?
The more I thought about it, the more pissed I am at myself and the dealer. There's a HUGE difference in sending a distress that tells the boat name, port, owner name and phone versus
one that sends the same, PLUS location.
Huge to the tune of potentially life and death.
I know some of this is on me, no doubt. But shouldn't the dealer understand the differences of the hook up, and the potential consequenses of the two?
Venting a bit. I'm still upset with myself.
