I posted this in NBR but thought I might get a better response here since it's a Long Island request so.......
I need recommendations for a good orthopedic surgeon who specializes in shoulder surgery. MJ broke her collar bone & scapula and now has what's called "floating shoulder". The break was pretty severe and doesn't seem to be healing. She really needs surgery but our insurance is only good in NY so looking for someone good on Long Island.

Dr Steve Simonsen at South Shore Orthopaedic Associates in West Islip......excellent surgeon

I also posted this in NBR

Don, what hospital is he affiliated with? We would prefer going to LIJ or North Shore Univ. Hospital. Not crazy about those Suffolk hospitals!

I used a sports surgeon out east (Riverhead). Would you travel that far? I can look him up if interested as he did phenomenal work for me.

my ex is also a OR Tech at NSUH. I'll get her recommendation.

Perry, would rather stay closer to Nassau County. If you can get some recommendations for NSUH that would be great! What kind of work did you have done on yourself?

Had a tear off of my right rotator cuff. Also have a rebuilt left ankle and two arthroscoped (sp?) knees.

Same Dr did my ankle and knees. Went to a shoulder specialist for the rotator. Surgeon did a number of professional sports teams so I felt like i was in good hands.

We have a friend who's an OR Tech in orthopedics area and will get his recommendation too. He would know them all well.

Dr. Stuart hershon. Manhasset. He's done my shoulder, rotator cuff tear, and is the team ortho surgeon for the ny Yankees. I've had very good success with him.
Good luck!

I will send you the name once I get it confirmed...I think I must be spelling it wrong because I cannot locate the practice.

Barb... Dr Anne Kelly is tops. She has an office in the Omni building right across the street from the Coliseum. She operates out of Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC and North Shore on the Island. One of New York's top orthopedic surgeons. I've known many who have gone to her and the results are the same. Outstanding. Very nice person too. Her Long Island office phone number is 516.357.8208. Check her out. Good luck

Contact the Hospital for Special Surgery. They are world-class in orthopaedic work. They have a physician referral line. Call them, answer a few questions and they get you in to see a specialist. They are located on E. 70 st in Manhattan.

Thanks Perry! We're compiling a list of all recommendations and calling to see what our options are. We have some time to evaluate since this isn't an emergency.

Barbara,

I'm having arthoscopic SLAP surgery in November for my shoulder. I'm going with a local orthopeadic surgeon at LIJ, but my surgery, with only a partial tear and no other complications, is far less invasive what you're describing.

When I needed spinal surgery for a herniated disc years ago, I went the the Hospital of Special Surgery. I have been as good as new for almost 20 years. For something as serious as what your SO is experiencing, HSS is the way to go. We all have our personal doctor recomendations, but HSS is excellent in all respects.

I hope all goes well for you.

No prob, anytime. We all deserve great care. You've got a bunch of solid suggestions to start.

Duck, not sure what SLAP stands for but if its to repair a torn rotator cuff, i've got some aftercare suggestions.

Great luck to all with the medical requirements.

Barb........relax....its a very simple procedure......they only have to do this : :)

The " anchor " part is what hurt me the most when the pain meds wore off..........

Then you get to take this to the beach with you.........

Not the rotator cuff. It's a partial tear of the superior labral anterior- posterior ,(SLAP),
area of the bicep.

I sincerely hope that the doctor understands this better than I do! Very painful, but I understand minimally invasive arthoscopic surgery with usually good results. P/T for 2-4 weeks. Any P/T suggestions would be welcome.

For me, it was the rotator cuff but the area's similar.

Take the ice machine or get one. Put water bottles in the freezer and just keep dropping them into the unit.

Get an easy chair that you can almost lay down with. I didn't have this and the first couple of weeks were brutal trying to sleep. If I had a better chair it would have been much easier. I propped myself up on the couch but could never get completely comfortable.

Give up arm wrestling...

great luck with your surgery and recovery as well...

Not sure...I like the bucket affect of a full easy chair. Not sure if you'd get that from just that unit. I have a chair now that I wish I had then. Full recliner...Just tip it back and adjust the pillows. I could keep my arm on my chest with gravity vs trying to keep it in place.
