I am not documenting my Gulfstar, I got my NJ hull numbers and stickers. I still want to put a name on the transom of the boat and the hailing port is this acceptable? Is it in violation of any laws assuming I properly display the NJ hull numbers and stickers?

Absolutely acceptable.

Thanks Greg, I thought it would be okay but I like everything to be done to the "letter" of the law. I admit to being ignorant when it comes to this area of the law....

Well these days you never know but it is perfectly acceptable to show th name and hailing port on the transom of a non doc vessel...

We require it.

Things have become strange regarding hail ports. It used to be the home port of the vessel but anymore it seems to be the home of the owner. I don't know if the rules have changed or it is jut that the documentation bureaucrats don't know that Denver is not a coastal town.

the first amendment would trump any regulation.

No fed. law nor regulation prohibits it, and I can't imagine how any NJ law would - that would cause an enormous conflict with any state registered vessels engaged in commercial fishing activities, which are REQUIRED by the MSFCMA to display name and hailing port on the stern, and name on the bows.

Then again, we're talking NJ...

Thanks guys I am using Little Egg, NJ my marina as the hailing port. I'm naming the boat WIRELESS ONE the old Wireless One has been renamed Black Beards Revenge. I was already able to transfer my MMSI and EPIRB to the new NJ registered boat. This allows me to re use my VHF 200 radios (all ready programmed and removed from the Mainship) and my NAVIONICs Class B AIS transponder. I can change the ships dimensions but not the MMSI on the AIS.
This should satisfy NOAA, Boat US, the State of New Jersey as well as the USCG. I turned in my old documentation to the proper authorities at DHS. Notarized and all.

I think you should homeport her in RI Bill. No taxes. Worked for Kerry for a bit!!!!!!!!

There is no requirement that a hailing port be coastal, or even wet. The requirement is something like "must be a legal place" and there's a reference (book, I think ) cited as the source of all legally acceptable places. I had at one time thought the place must have a post office, but that turned out to not be the case either.

David, I already paid my taxes in NJ on the vessel. I don't play any games when it comes to taxes. The taxes including NJ registration, stickers and a new title were less than $1,200.00.
It's not worth playing around with taxes in my opinion.

Not sure what you mean by we require it. Undocumented vessels are not required by federal law or any state law that I m aware of to show a name and port

I don't think rules have changed regarding hailing ports for documented vessels. It doesn't have to be the actual port or the home of the owner. It can be any town and afaik it s always been like that

Once again my poor grammar and sentence structure show's itself Pascal. I wanted to make sure a State registered vessel that is not documented could have a vessel name and home port on it. This was from a legal standpoint. I'll have the proper State bow numbers and stickers on it in addition to the vessel's name and hailing port.
