Hi Everyone,

I am going to the Boat Show and am looking in the large range for a cruiser/sport yacht. I have been eyeing the Doral Alegria and Kydds has one. Here is my question......

It is 45 feet normally and with the extended platform is 49 feet. Also it has the IPS drives so there is no relief from running aground if I do so. Is 45 too big for the channels. I am learning and do not know my way. I will am taking a Coast Guard class as well as hirea captain to teach me but for the south shore, is a 4 foot draft and a 45 foot boat just too big? It is a gorgeous boat....

Open to any comments.

There's a 58' Sea Ray on my canal......and he has no problems in the bay. Just stay in the channels.....

Where will you be keeping the boat ?

I have a 38' boat with a listed draft of 4', but with a decent amount of fuel and water onboard it's more like 4'3"-4'5". At that draft you have to be careful on the south shore. It can definitely be done, and I haven't really had any problems, but you have to stick to the channels, and depending where you keep the boat you may have to watch the tides. I usually avoid going in and out of my canal within a couple of hours of low tide. If you're in a marina with a deeper entrance it shouldn't be a problem.

Another issue is if you want to go to Fire Island on the weekends there will be a limited number of slips you can fit into. So if you like to head out Saturday mornings and go to the beach you're probably not going to get a spot. If you arrive earlier in the week it's not a problem.

Thanks for the reponses. I will be docking this boat in merrick bay. I guess I'll just follow the fishing boats out of Freeport...hehehehe

All seriousness, what course can i take to learn how to read the channels. I can folloow some and i have a gps but channel markers are vague at best. Will a Coast Guard Course address that? Again, i'll hire a captain but thats mostly to help me dock.

Does anyone know about Doral Boats? I read a forum where 2 people had horrible experiences. Everyone else raved about them and said they were right on par with sea ray, formula and other high end boats. This Alegria is beautiful and i can't wait to se it in person. They say Fit and Finish on the boat is top rate. Any comments?

Walter, you sound jealous because he's looking at a bigger boat with those new IPS drives...I think it's called p***s envy!
 
Buy me a $2m boat then Walter. Why let the money go to waste?

Don't you guys ever go to sleep? Oops, forgot, it is Friday night. Walter, that's my point, why can't AJ's post add up? New boater with little experience on the South Shore with a 2006 Sea Ray who wants to move up to a 45 footer after one year. That profile covers 90 percent of boaters from Merrick to Lindenhurst.

OH....and for the records.....its 2 pensions and 2 - 401K's.....but thats not important.
 
a u.s. power squadron safe boating course will cover the various channel markers and how to read them (as well as lots of other good info).

OH......I understood it as the smarts....... were for boating on the south shore.

Wow the 90% profile stops in Lyndihourst.... TG I am in Babaylon/Brightwaters...... I'll stick with my 32 and keep it at the.....ok Rob.... here it goes... At the Long Island Yach Club....

Ok, now that Walter and Don are done embracing...

Would there be a major concern regarding the IPS drives in the GSB? Run aground with regular drives and yes you can do some damage but you have a shot at being lucky. Isn't there a greater risk with the IPS system i.e. likely to do damage?

IPS would make me nervous on the south shore. Most channels are deeper than people say they are, but some are shallow. You would be very limited on places to go and would need to be right on when you enter coves. Also in the beginning of the season there is alot of floating poles, bags and other garbage and I am curious how the IPS would handle a hit from one of these. A bag probably just gets chopped, but a pole onmost other boats, usually will spin away from the running gear, with a IPS it will head right to the prop.

With that said, it is a great boat he is looking at. I like Dorals. It was one of the ones I was considering, only alot smaller and not with IPS. I hear the IPS shears off when it hits something. Seems like it would be hard to find that in the bay when it sinks to the mud. Make sure your insurance covers the drives. People poke holes in I/O outdrives, but design wise they are still the most efficient and safest way to power a boat, just alot of maintenance.(I spent this week painting mine. Personally, I want to move to inboards to get away from the maintenance.
