Don,
He always has different boats that he keeps there because he is always buying and selling boats that he puts motors in to. This year it's a 24' boat, last year he had a 32' Carver there, the year before he had something else. I sometimes lose track of what he is cruising around in. He has 2/3's of the bulkhead so the Carver fit with room to spare.
He has two other 23' boats over at his gas station that are for sale. He was going to register one of them so his son could use it and keep it there, but the summer went by too quickly, and he had a couple of people interested in the boats at the station, so he never got around to it.
There is electric in the yard that he can use if he needs to for a power tool, but not the kind you would plug the boat in to and walk away.
There is also a hose that he can use to wash the boats down with.
He has a good set up because the family that owns the house uses him for their auto repairs, so by the time he has to pay them for the slips in the spring, they usuaally have had close to that dollar amount of work done on their cars.
It's not a bad set up because he just needs a place to tie up and go. He has become pretty friendly with the owners too.
It's not the kind of set up I would want, but it suits his needs and the price is right.
He was using my uncle's smaller slip on my canal, (the 30' of bulkhead slip) for a center console this summer and liked it a lot better. It's a set up like mine, but on the other side of the canal and a few blocks north.
I'm not sure if he's going back to my uncle next season though, unless his son puts something in the water and needs a slip, because it is more money ($1500?) and further to the Jones Inlet for the fishing boat.
He actually keeps asking my uncle to sell it to him so he'd have it for his son, but it's not for sale.
We have other friends that are behind a house in Amityville. They paid $1000 this season too for their 24' boat. Same kind of set up. They had been in a boatyard paying $1500 before this season, but they heard about this place and jumped on the chance to save $500. Again though, they weren't looking to hang out on their boat either. They pretty much just jump on it and go. When they come back they give it a quick wash down and leave.
When my brother had a boat he kept it behind a house in Copiague Harbor. He was paying close to a $1000 too. Again though, he had a walk around cuddy that he used exclusively for fishing. He was only ever there long enough to load and unload the boat, and do a washdown after a fishing trip, so it worked for him.
He had no interest in hanging out on his boat.
