Sludge buster?

Is there any chemical sludge buster to clean holding tanks? I have used KO continuously and flush when from time to time but I would like to do a more complete job of cleaning the tank bottom.
 
Have chili cookoff on the boat and let all use the heads

Maybe CP whould to the cleaning?
 
Nope Andy, CP isn't for that application. If you pump the tank regularly and flush it after each pumpout, that's about the best you can do. I don't know of any "product" that will do any better. The key is to pump it out often, not once every couple of months.

So CP is just for cleaning the bowl and to give it a lube job?
 
I recently saw an ad for a service that power cleans your holding tank in our neck of the woods. You may have something similiar where you boat.
 
Yes Andy, that's what it's for, just a toilet bowl cleaner and lube - but it IS compatible with KO that goes into the holding tank. Many toilet cleaners aren't and will kill the good bacteria in KO, rendering it useless - so ya gotta watch what you use in the hopper, if you're using KO in the holding tank.

Toward the middle of last season, I noticed a lot of odor from the holding tank. When I pumped, I held a garden hose turned on full blast in the air vent line. Sludge came out for a good five minutes. The garden hose did basically the same thing as the Tornado pictured above, just more of a hassle.

If worse came to worse, you could pump the tank, throw in a bunch of baking soda followed by a bunch of vinegar, wait ten minutes and follow that with several gallons of hot water and another pump out. I don't know if it would work on your holding tank, but it works on clogged drains. Even if it doesn't work, people will get out of your way at the pump out thinking your foaming boat had rabies.
 
Clever idea but I dont want to think about what the foam would look like and contain. Will you come and do for me?:)
 
Something you can do is mix some baking yeast in warm water and then pour it into your holding tank. Then go for a ride and mix it up real good. Leave it in the tank till your ready to pump out. Do this every few weeks as it will break down any grease build up you may have. This will reduce some of the sludge buildup in the bottom of your tank. This bacteria loves grease, also good to use on kitchen sinks...

We use cascade dishwasher detergent. Pour it right down the deck fitting. Does a really nice job breaking stuff down. I also flush , flush and flush when pumping out...

I dont even get a ring around the holding tank....

I add the cascade when it gets to about half....

LOl... Well .... thats the sticky wicket... I dont measure... yea i know some help.... I dont pour in alot ... id say about 2 -3 x more then u would a dish washer... ( dont ask what factors make me add more.... )

but it works ... have done it on for a few years....

Rob.......Does this mean you save the KO for the dish washer ??
 
I have one of those tornado gizmos and it works great. Pump out first and then hook up the dockside water for a few minutes and then pump out again. Works great and its not necessary to use it every pump out I probably use mine 5 times as season.
 
Yea ... BUT... where in gods name are u putting the gizmo when ur done....Not on my boat....

ID absolutley flip my cork if saw someone putting the dock hose down inside there holding tank.....

Hope ur using ur own hose.....

i bought a Tornado to put on my holding tank. It has a hose type connection on it to attach a hose for rinsing the tank. It also has a check valve type connector to prevent back flow. I plan to install the Tornado this spring before launch. jooboa where on your tank did you install your Tornado? The instructions say to install it on the side of the tank but I think it would work installed on the top of the tank also.
