I have a 2002 356 with Merc 8.1's equipped with smartcraft. I would really like add a fuel flow meter on the dash. Has anyone ever done this? Is it a plug play setup? I talked to Merc and they said "if" I have the harness I just need the system monitor display. Any information would be appreciated..thanks.

SmartCraft is not compatible with NMEA 2000. If that vintage engine has a system output, you will have to go with something like a NorthStar Multi-Function Display, which is a Brunswick company and supports SmartCraft.

An alternative is to use a NMEA2000 fuel flow sensor, of which there are several manufacturers. I see that just today, Floscan has announced the release of FloNet, their NMEA2000 sensors.

If you don't need other parameters such as oil pressure, RPM, etc, you can go with a standard (i.e. not SmartCraft) fuel flow sensor.
