One of the best trips we ever took brought us to cuttyhunk for a two nights. It was a warm august about three years ago and where ever we walked, I noticed garter snakes darting in and out of old logs or under rocks or dead in the "streets" (if you have been there you are wondering what could have run over a snake...golf cart? or the one PU truck?)

Anyway, it seemed odd to see so many skakes on an island surounded by salt water. How'd they get there?

Probably swam. I grew up on those islands, Pasque in particular, and as a kid I always wondered how any of the animals got there, but my mother (who spent most of her childhood on Pasque) always assured me she had seen all kinds of things swimming the hole. The one thing they do NOT have on Pasque is skunks. I don't know if there are skunks on Cuttyhunk, but if not... maybe that's why you saw so many snakes!

Yup, I've seen them too. In fact, one of the oddest things I've ever seen in nature was a garter snake with a half eaten frog sticking out it's mouth as it sunned it's self outside the gift shop at the 4 corners.
