My sister got a quote of $42/ft for her 24 footer to soda blast the bottom. No paint. Does this sound reasonable? Bottom probably could use it but certainly not horrendous.

Keep in mind that travel, setup, cleanup is no less or more if the boat is 24 feet or 100 feet. Also Hank, let her know the cost to now barrier coat the bottom and paint. I am thinking, for a 24 foot boat it may not be worth doing this.

Thanks both. I agree. I'm going to go up and look to see if it really is necessary.

Could scrape the bottom with a sharp wood chisel in a w/e at most. Did my 28 footer this way, back when !

Hank,
Big a$$ boats like ours (need to be much older though) there may be an argument to soda blast, but really, a 24 footer, and assuming a real old boat, just not worth the investment

That price sounds very high!! However as Walter said the Setup cleanup and travel is a huge factor with these jobs. Do to EPA laws they have to tarp the entire underneath then basically tent the boat so there is no toxic dust blowing around the yard. $1100 does sound crazy for the job and then it would be about the same for barrier and bottom. I was given a quote several years ago if I recall it was like $4500 to do my boat and it was a 4 month wait to get it done.

This work is likely highly dependent on location for how much it costs, the local competition dictates pricing.
I was quoted 2400 dollars last spring, about 64 dollars a foot for a 37 foot boat. Thought that was crazy, so i did it myself. I don't think I would do it again. After all the scraping and paint stripper, there was still the issue on mine of shiny gel coat that was never prepped. I had to sand the entire hull with a RO sander and shop vac. The amount of hours I had into the job was huge.
That price does not sound bad to me if the boat is ready to paint after they leave.

I remember that post, LOL, sounded like a real rough job!

I went down yesterday and looked at her boat. Definitely does not need soda blasting. A little scraping and sanding and she's good to go. Thanks to all for your input.

That is good news for her, it is a rough job to have to do yourself, or write a check for.

If my sister had a boat, I'd be more than happy to scrape the bottom for her, paint it and wax it. It's the least we can do for our family.

Perhaps you misunderstood. She is a sister from my church. I'll throw a couple extra bucks in the basket.
